But it sounds ok running and idles smooth?

 

Has a small miss at idle can barely tell. When I get it home I'm pop the cover.

 

Remember, oil really thins out also. What looks like a huge puddle really may not be that much.

Sucks to hear the motor may be shot but I would definitely get a 2nd opinion on it.

 

Agreed on 2nd opinion...how's a shop that doesn't do overhauls come to that conclusion.
So where was the oil leak from? Oil filter? How did it start leaking and when was it last changed.
On my Detroit, 2.5 gallons low and I'm off the dipstick. I cannot imagine your were 8 gallons low and didn't get a low oil pressure alarm.

 

That was my thought when I first read him say that. What a shame though considering you just spent a lot of money on a new APU.

 

Not saying any engine has a capacity of 8 gallons...he had stated he thought he was 6-8 gallons low.

 

Engine was only 3-4 gallons low we added a gallon at the shop and it barly showed on the dip stick. $2500 later truck is at the house while i figure out what to do. im almost 90% sure a ring broke inside which is allow all this blow by.
