How do you become a Pilot/Escort vehicle for oversized loads?

 

Find a pilot escort company and say "Teach me" how to do this.

Work for them a while. You will need to learn everything first before just slapping lights and signs onto your personal vehicle and following a whale down the road.

There is a whole lot of thinking, teamwork and communications that is key to success. Once in a while I'll be coming on and a pilot vehicle will simply get strongwilled and physically take my lane. (You aint going this a-way driver stop where you at, wide coming through.) You betcha Im a make some room for what's coming behind that Pilot vehicle. God only knows how big or heavy it will be. This'll be fun.

But tell that to the 20 impatient cars herding the pilot vehicle until Mr Whale shows up coming on with his oversize that hangs over the entire road and scrapes the telephone poles. The 20 inpatients will clear out soon enough.

It's a wild life. And you have to be absolutely steady eddie reliable. You cannot and will not be late. lazy, sleeping in or whatever. It's seriously high drama when you got a 17 foot load behind you and your pole. You want to be sure that load will fit. If it gets stuck? Guess what, it's on you.
