Oh, what a subject. They all provide temp services to legit, reputable companies in need of a qualified temp driver to replace someone out on sick leave, vacation, or to fill a temp position/short contract situation. Where their 'bread and butter' is at: companies with high turnover and can't keep qualified people, for a variety of reasons.

I worked at driver temp services when between jobs or when I transitioned back into trucking after taking a two year 'sabbatical' to pursue 'call center - customer service' opportunities as a single father. Last time was about 20 years ago.

I only transitioned to full time employment with the client on three occasions. I see driver 'temp services' as a necessary 'evil' unfortunately, an extreme 'mixed bag'. Most of the companies I 'temped' at eventually closed, a 'mercy death' in most cases - the ones that I'm aware of anyway. First trucking 'temp job' was during the early '80s.

Anyone care to share their experiences? My experience went out with a bang as the last temp company told me I was no longer welcome on their premises! I hadn't actually worked for them in a few years but I would stop by a couple - three times a year just to say 'Hello' as I had worked for them off and on for several years. Never knew there was a problem until... Not sure if they are still in business as I last stopped by many years ago - they moved across town shortly after. I had worn out my welcome and didn't realize it LOL!! Oh well, I'm retiring within the next 24 months with a good pension and no debt.

Please share your thoughts / experiences - don't provide the name of the service if you aren't comfortable doing so.

I don’t mind sharing the name. I was a temp for the Pony Express around a 150 years ago. But, I quit immediately when they tried to move me to day shift.

It wouldn’t be that big a thing now days, since the technology is there for me now. But then? Oh, heck no! I’d have rather had a stake through the heart. At least that would’ve been relatively quick!

I worked for road dog drivers (yes that's the real name) had good experiences with them, you worked when you want, they had steady work and paid ot after 8 and double time after 12. Also they had good permanent jobs as well

The best job I ever had was gotten thru a temp agency. Originally a one day assignment which turned into 2 weeks. Iliked them , they liked me. Kept in touch and got hired eventually.

Whiteford Leasing years ago had a temp driver service called Labor Resources. Worked there almost a year, liked it. As stated, could work when you wanted to, or not at all. Lots of different assignments, many times my job was picking up and returning lease trucks from service.

My first experience with temp agency was great. Fill in on a temp dedicated run for a couple months. The next two jobs soured me on the service. Both were suppose to be long term temp jobs but on the first one the night before starting the company called and said they gave it to a recently retired driver who needed extra cash. The next one was a delivery job and the manager wanted to start me at lower rate than promised til I learned route.

I'm ready to semi retire and think a temp agency would be a good transition into retirement but it seems like the trucking companies are just trying to cut their wages, rather than use the skills of an experienced driver who doesnt need an 70 plus hour a week job.

The few times I worked for a 'driver leasing company'(?) were poor indeed. I'm glad those of you who had good experiences did so. Seems like every place except two that I remember was a 'diversity and inclusion' crap hole that was neither. They couldn't keep anyone qualified working for them for any length of time for all too obvious reasons and I wouldn't put up with the crap - temp service would tell me to leave and don't bother coming back. I know of one temp office that was robbed at gunpoint by their 'pets' multiple times and I didn't really care as they were horrible people. I'm retiring in a few years so I have much to reflect on.
