Should a unit even do a defrost when set on 35* Continuous? After defrost, it was at 44* and Cut off. Switched it off and back on. Went green and ran for a couple minutes but wouldn't cool, then it shut down again. Headed to Carrier now. Primary question is should even a proper working unit even need to defrost with a 35* setting?

Most units defrost every 6-8 hours regardless [on a schedule] whether it thinks it needs to or not. This timed defrost schedule is set by admin.

But it sounds like yours has some other issues going on.

Yes because the evaporator(cooling) coil is much colder than 35 and will become blocked with ice if it isn't defrosted.

Yes. When hauling flowers we set them at 36 and they defrosted all the time in the summer

Yes in this heat of course. If the temp outside is higher than in the box it needs to be doing a defrost cycle
