    Like the title says I'm a recent CDL grad. I have my Class A CDL with T and X endorsements. I graduated Aug 1st.

    Now, I've managed to find a position with a small company. Guy owns 2 trucks and likes to run teams. He hired me on, but I have a few concerns after going on a run.

    Co-driver and I took a load of plastic pipes from Ohio to Maine. First thing I notice is that a trailer tire is bald. I let co-driver know and he said the boss knew. Ok. I can deal with that. Get on the road and there's a terrible wobble that you can feel throughout the entire truck and steering wheel. I'm uncomfortable with this.Whatever, I'll finish the load and let bossman know. Co-driver said boss knew about this issue as well.

    I get 623 miles in 10hrs 45mins and switch with co-driver. He's a terrible driver in m opinion. He speeds 20+mph where he can (ungoverned truck). He tailgates other vehicles (10 ft behind at highway speeds). And he flies up to stop lights and signs. So, all this with the wobble and my co-drivers driving tendencies make it very hard to sleep. As such, I get zero sleep. My turn to drive again. I'm pretty tired. I start out fine. Then the tired starts to hit me and every time I blink my vision gets a little blurry. So, I stop and eat some food. I'm feeling a bit better about things. So, I start driving again. An hr or two down the road I start feeling the same way. At 6 hrs 30 mins driving I'm exhausted and decide to take my 30 and try to get in a wink while the truck is stationary. I was unsuccessful, but I try to press on a bit more. At 8 hrs my co-driver knowing that I'm new peeks out and asks if everything is okay. I tell him that I didn't manage to get any sleep and that I'm really tired. He tells me to pull over and get some rest. I pull over, but as soon as I leave the drivers seat he gets in and starts driving on my clock before his 10 is up. I let the bossman know, but he doesn't care.

    This isn't how I want to start my career.

    So, I have a 2 year old and a 2 week old. I want to be home as much as possible. I'm okay with being out 2 or 3 days, being home a few hrs and then back out, home on weekends. I'd preferably like to be home everyday even if that means I'm only sleeping at home.

    So, my question is does anybody know any decent gigs for recent grads that fits these criteria in the NE Ohio/Youngstown area?

    Look at Schneider regional. It was a great place to start. I am in central OH. You might get think the little company pays better but you are too new and those kids need you home safe. At Schneider you might make a little less or you might not, you will learn how to be a real driver and they will help you get home safe. You have to learn in the first year, Schneider takes great care of new people. Good luck!
    Don't ride with that maniac again or that POS truck. Be safe.

    I have a pre-hire with Schneider bulk out or Coraopolis, PA. Thing is that they don't have the home time I'm lookin' for. Bulk training is a minimum of 5 weeks. That's less than optimal. Even past that 5 weeks I'm still out a whole week and home weekends. Again, I'm not looking to be out that long. I want to be with my family.

    Frankly, I'm tired of receiving the same sort of response. I ask for local or 2-3 days out at a time and everybody and their brother suggests some mega that does home weekly at minimum. I'm not trying to be rude here, but I know about the megas. I know that they're gonna keep me out longer than I want to be out.

    I was really excited about that position. The truck was a Peterbilt 386.

    JRayL Transportation has local and regional and hires new cdl grads.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Holland has a training program for new cdl grads that have no experience. One of their training terminals is in Youngstown. This is a Teamsters outfit.
    "Come discover your direction at Holland! Holland, Inc,. is a recognized leader in next-day delivery, quality handling, and on-time performance in the LTL industry. If you have your Class A CDL, but may not have the experience and/or the required endorsements to be a Holland driver then you may be interested in our Driver Training Program offered at our Youngstown, OH terminal. The Driver Training Program allows you to work on the dock while you get your Hazmat/Tanker endorsements or work with a driver mentor to gain the skills necessary to become a full time driver with Holland. We have both Local and Regionals positions available. Local drivers are home daily and Regional drivers are home every week.
    This is a great opportunity that offers great pay and benefits for drivers who recently graduated from driving school, who may not have experience driving our type of equipment, who may not have driven recently, or are missing either their Hazmat and/or Tanker endorsements."
    Drivers Training Candidates should have:
    • Valid Class A CDL
    • No major accidents in the last 3 years
    • No DUI/DWI in the last 3 years
    Qualified applicants will be required to take a pre-employment drug screen with true negative results and required to take additional pre-employment testing/assessments
    Holland, a part of YRC Worldwide, is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer Minorities/Females/Persons with Disabilities/Protected Veterans.
    Some may disagree with what I say, but I have always stuck by this general rule for new drivers...stay away from small mom/pop trucking outfits when you start. It's a great way to lose your license and end your career fast.
    Start with Schneider. My experience, and many as well, has been great. Good training. You're new to the industry so use their training programs to your advantage. Your home-time is not as important as your experience right now and with 3-6 months of well-rounded experience under your belt will allow you to seek the position you are looking for, with the home time you want.
    Just my two cents
    I must disagree. Hometime is incredibly important....to me. With a 2 week old and a two year old? Yeah, I've got to be around to pick up the slack.I won't work out of a place that'll cost me the career. As seen here. I'm out at the first sign of trouble.
    I know there are decent local opportunities out there. Just have to find them. Which is why I'm posting here. I'm not asking for advice. Whether I should go Local or Regional or OTR. I'm asking for suggestions of companies that will get me what I'm looking for.
    Chinatown gets it. He doesn't try to give me unsolicited advice. He gives me the information I asked for.
    As a recent grad, you may need to be a little more flexible, just sayin.
    An important piece of information that I found later to be important is terminal location. If its too far from home and you only have a ten hour break, you won't go home.
    Get six months in somewhere and you may be able to squeak into more appealing positions. I moved on at nine months.
    I worked for a mom & pop place; the guy had 4 trucks. Biggest mistake in trucking I ever made.
