Last two that i had that used them were the same. Most companies have it where the truck won't move unless you log in. But i can move the truck without tripping it to driving.
-
I believe 5 miles is the criteria. When I leave I never go to driving, but at 5.3 or so it will have a duty change on the screen.
-
Agree every company is different whether they allow off duty driving and for how long, how far and what criteria has to be met before you qualify. But the regulations says the unit must put you on drive line if you go over 5 MPH. I believe in yard move you get up to 20 miles before it puts you in on duty driving. PC doesn't count towards your on duty time, but yard move keeps you on duty not driving, again unless you go over the 20 miles then you are put into on duty driving.

I don't have yard or PC. On duty, driving, sleeper berth, fueling and off duty

You’re likely still running an AOBRD that was grandfathered in until Dec 2019. That’s how my old company was, we had two miles and up to 25mph before it went to driving. But the ELD guidelines state that any movement over 5mph change the duty status to driving, which is why you had so many people wanting exemptions for yard moves and such.Expeditor Thanks this.

Not everyone has your ONE YEAR experience to fall back on. And the fact that you were an aircraft mechanic, double advantage. It’s strange how some companies had great safety records in the past running paper logs. We all know the govt doesn’t want control of the trucking industry, so that a relief.

To the OP, unless you drove for 8 hours straight then you likely could’ve extended a stop earlier in the day to 30 minutes to stay legal since you know the break is required. But you’re paid by the load so you pushed it and it bit you in the butt this time. I’ve been there, and it sucks. Not sitting on the side of the road, but I’ve had brain farts and had to sit and do a 30 because I screwed up the calculations in my head. Learn from it and move on.
tucker, fargonaz, SixShooterTransport and 1 other person Thank this. -
PC by definition if an Off Duty status. The green book says we can use it to accomplish our 10 hour rest break even. So you do not need to perform a 30 minute rest break to qualify for Off Duty Driving. Unless your company has a stupid policy stating so....

Some devices have different parameters set, and I'm unsure if those are even legal, but it looks like PC, if used to get you to safe parking, might be the least likely to actually be judged illegal, better than having a flag thrown for hos violation, and yard move.
I don't know where 18.3 or 18.4 miles from a set point will locate you that well, either. No one ever invites me to look and when we had PeopleNet, it wasn't that exact, although moving into a dock was movement detected.
FWIW, what we have, which is supposed to be compliant, but which I also doubt, will flag a violation if the truck moves at all while on sleeper berth. Shows in the office, though not on the screen.
And the big push was from companies to supply the mandate, oversold hype about making us safer by forcing compliance with arbitrary and capricious rules.
But no rules about a fool wasting our time or getting us in trouble for making us chase after a signed bill, like happened to me yesterday. Darned idiot. I hated that place years ago.Expeditor Thanks this. -
I agree PC would of been the best choice, but he did not have it available, don't know why. A driver has to do what a driver has to do. I'm sure you would get people arguing with you that if you go into sleeper, since sleeper is off duty, you can't get ding, yes you can. Three different off duties are available to driver. Also if you use sleeper you must log sleeper, not off duty. I believe the mandate for ELD states that ELD companies will be self certified. This means they will interpret the rules how they see it and then program the ELD accordingly. FMCSA is not going to police the ELD manufactures but hold the carrier responsible if there is a problem

I know why, he was out of drive time, and the parameters of that machine were set to preclude what he wanted to do as it was too late. If the rules get changed, how soon will the machines reflect that change? Our ELD didn't do splits right, but now it does after lots of 'persuasion'.
