Not taking the ATL bypass

There is a myth going around that it is legal to use I 20 and go through. Not true!

 

Print out a fake B/L that has an address inside the loop. Get pulled over, show them the paperwork...now you're legal.

I hauled furniture for Ashley. They expected to see us running around the city so we didn’t seem out of place. I did see a lot of trucks pulled over though.

I am laughing (with) you on this. The reason is our daycab guy did this once. He got stopped by a DOT Cop. The cop let him go but took note of the address and followed him. After he got back on I 75 was pulled over again. The COP did not make a case, but he did tell him that some DOT cops and state troopers will sometimes follow the driver. Your chances of having this happen is really remote though.

 

Oh yeah. First time I drove through Atlanta I did that. I tried to wake up my trainer for help. He didn't get up. When we did a driver switch he came out of the sleeper and laughed at me. He said I know what you did. Funny stuff.

 

Let me tell you about being in the loop. I am in Atlanta almost every day. If you have a day cab, dump trailer, or pulling a Connex box. I wouldn't worry about it. Sleepers with van, flat, tanks it would be best to find out if DOT is working in the loop before cutting through town.

DOT is all you really need to worry about. Locals and GSP won't bother you unless you are speeding or in the wrong lane.

Now another thing you have to worry about is getting into an accident. If you are in the loop, and get hit by a 4 wheeler. Total not your fault! You and the 4 wheeler will both be charged. This happened to a tanker driver last year. It was proved that the 4 wheeler caused the accident, but both got charged with the accident and the driver also got the ticket for being in the loop.

Ga DOT tends to work in packs, in different parts of town a week at a time, and target different trucks on a day to day basis. For example. This week they maybe working 75 north of town. Next week maybe 85 north of town. Next week maybe downtown. Today they maybe targeting dump trucks and roll offs. Tomorrow maybe tankers. The next day maybe flat beds.

And, another thing nowhere in Ga are big trucks allowed in the left lane of a 3 lane interstate, or in 2 left lanes of a 4 or more lane interstate. There are parts of town that say no trucks in 3 left lanes.

 

I do it just about every time I go to or thru Atlanta. But we have a booker/broker near the center. So I could always say going to or coming from there.

 

It has been almost 6 years since I was in Atlanta, I have seen Troopers stop drivers for this several times. You are right that is is the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (Lead State MCSAP Agency) that enforces this. However both this agency and the Georgia State Patrol report to the same Commanding officer. The Colonel that runs the DPS. Troopers (at least at one time) did assist them with this! Just saying!
