Am I the only one who has this issue? I can back pretty well in tight areas, but when it comes to open docks I can't back for my life. Yesterday I had 4 open dock doors to back to ( had to hit the middle one ) and it took me about 5 minutes to get it. Meanwhile the reciever is standing with the door open with the disappointment look on his face.

    Such a weird phenomenon

Take me to any dock in New Jersey and I can hit it better than an open dock....

Wonder what it is about these open docks...

You’re missing a nearby reference point that is typically used imperceptibly by your brain to gauge your position and orientation in the dock area.

What STexan said. Plus, you always miss them when somebody is watching. If no one is paying attention, you can do it blind folded and no pull-ups.

New pavement with no guidelines is tough, with worn pavement, you learn to follow the tire marks. After awhile. If it's expansion cut and filled concrete, sometimes you can line up with those lines.

+3 If no one's paying attention, I'm a backing GOD. One person, or worse yet, a coworker, and they get a big kick out of my ineptitude lol

Must be two kinds of open docks, it doesn't get easier than having no obstacles in the way. The dock is square and the trailer is square, can't get much simpler than that.

Sounds tacky I know, but I know of some drivers that will pull out 2 cones and set them up about 10 feet from the door. Gives them a point of reference. I never did that, but at night I did use flashlights.

I agree with you if there are lines drawn. I have had trouble hitting a dock square with no point of reference.

My last job had crooked lines at their terminal. It drove everybody completely crazy. One driver finally had enough and went out with black paint and a roller and painted over them. The owner had to fix them after that. Everybody was much happier.

I find it harder to dock when there no lines, or any other trailers in the yard. I've literally gone out and put a wheel choke on the ground to mark a spot. I've also noticed if you use the concrete joints when there's no line it helps.

I'm of course talking about non-traditional docks.
