I drive dump trailer for a grain company in upstate ny. We are paid 24 percent of whatever the load pays. Generally its 60k plus a year, benefits, and no retirement.
We pick up beans in baltimore and bring them back to our plant. Its a 6 hr drive and it pays 24 a ton. We haul 25 ton.
Now, we arent using as much product. The beans are being delivered to another plant. About halfway home. It now pays 12 bucks a ton. We drive empty the 3.5 hours to home.
We are driving the same distance for half the pay. Is there a rule or reg or law that says... if the driver is hauling empty he has to be compensated for his time?
Thanks, matthew clark.
Phelps, ny.
How long empty do you...

We have 3 pay scales pulling tankers. Depending on the distance.
Most of our hauls are long. We have a few shorts so they only pay half. And a couple of mediums.
In the beginning of summer. We picked up a haul. It was a medium haul for the other company originaly doing it. But then it became a long haul. A lot of aggravation but it had higher then normal long haul pay. 2 loads per day.
Now it's a short haul. With short pay. And instead of 2 loads there's a 3rd different load in between the 2 loads. 3 shorts aren't earning as much as the 2 longs.
Any day now. There be snow. And the day will be 1 extremely long haul. And earnings will be even less.
If you want consistent pay. You need to find a different company. With consistent year round work. Regardless of summer or winter. Not one that works your butt off in the summer and slows down in the winter. -
Are you still making $60k? If yes, I assume you’re happy. If not, go straight to the boss and let him know.
On a similar note, I wish folks would learn to forget about cpm, %, etc... and just cut to the chase. Is the company paying you per their policy and are you making what you would like to make. If not, try to resolve it with them or move on. Pretty simple really.
A lot of this stuff is like going to a car dealer and getting caught up in the details.
I’ve had people brag about how they told the dealer they’re not paying for dealer prep, or they got retail on their trade, etc... You ask them what they paid and they’ll come back with the same going price for that vehicle as most others.
Heck, I don’t care if the dealer charges $10,000 dealer prep and gives me $1.00 on my trade (just example, I don’t normally trade). I even told a dealer that once.
My point? All I care about is what that number at the bottom of the page looks like. All the crap above that line is just noise.
Same goes with my pay arrangement with an employer. Are they paying per our agreement and am I happy with my pay. I don’t care if it’s cpm, percentage, etc... whatever it is, is it being calculated correctly and am I happy with the bottom line.
Cpm and miles, or percentage or by load (whatever) is just noise above the bottom line.
And, I love the trailers that say “We’ve got the miles”. Those crack me up.Cattleman84, Coover, Blackshack46 and 1 other person Thank this. -

We only haul 1 way. There's nothing to bring back and no place to put it and no need for anything.
