What I meant was that if you do like one poster here and turn your breaks into 12 hour breaks everyday, over a period of 7 days that 14 hours you could have driven instead of sat around doing nothing. So let’s say you average 50 mph, that’s 700 miles you could have had extra on your check that are now gone because a person thinks they need 12 hours off. At lets say for example you make .42 a mile on 700 miles that just under $300 out the window because of wanting that extra 2 hours off everyday. Now don’t get me wrong you’ll have times where you’ll spend time waiting somewhere anyways and not get those miles, but at least if a driver just does the mandatory 10 hours off, you’re setting yourself up to maximize your time on the road. After all, aren’t we out here to make a living and not sit in random gross trucks tops?

Ahhhh....so one ought to bank those potential 14 hours (if you find that you are in the position/condition to press on) to cover those days when you do HAVE to wait, unable to drive those additional miles. Right?
-
That’s what I would do. There’s always going to be waiting in this job at some point. I’m just not one that’s going to do a 12 hour break. That’s too long in my opinion.

Yes, hds truck school is owned by hdl trucking, which runs for swift. They offer you a job with them, but it's not required by any means. HDL seems like a nice company to work for. They know your name and treat drivers well. I just wanted to train with my hubby and they didnt offer that option.
And I meant that if you are waiting to get a lot and you can take time for nails. Sometimes on a 10 you could drop your truck at a terminal or someplace safe to go do personal stuff. -
I was silly gave up my CDL-A but went there like 1 day 8 hour refresher and got to use the truck to test in. I did mine in phx but the instructor was spot on the tester was a bit of a dick for them but passed without any issuesL84APPT Thanks this.

I checked out HDS website and noted that they were owned by HDL. I'm looking forward to attending their open house. In the meantime, are there things I can do BEFORE enrolling (i.e. get the DOT required medical exam, drug testing, etc.)?
-
Drug test will be handled by the school or company you choose to go with. Most likely they’ll want you to get a fresh medical card through them. Or just ask, some companies want you to get a physical done before you show up.

The times are the difference between what the company shows me up front and the actual time windows allowed by the customer. Sometimes I can adjust it more to my liking, sometimes not.
If I can not adjust it to my liking, I do not accept the load. Simple.
To me, this is simply a job. I do not have to push myself to make ever more miles. I work at the pace I want to set, not what someone else tries to set for me.
And if I choose to do it that way, what is it to anyone else?
I don't need or want to run as hard as some people want to, or are 'made' to do.
In a few days I will have reached 8 years in trucking, and with the same (low life bottom feeder, crappy to work for, etc.) company.
I am happy with them and they are happy with me.88 Alpha Thanks this. -
Carhart makes work clothes. You don’t have to buy that brand but I’ve found they hold up very well. You can find them at any farm and ranch store which will also carry steel toe boots. Look for Tractor Supply, Big R, Murdocks, etc.L84APPT Thanks this.

That should be the beauty of working independently, right? Being able to set your own pace and finding your own style of getting things done that satisfies all parties involved (company, customer and driver), right? So how far in advance do you get those logistics (company vs customer window)? Thanks. Thanks for chiming iLast edited by a moderator: Dec 7, 2018
