I'm guessing the price per gallon of fuel isn't very important in the grand scheme of that kind of operation. It wouldn't be hard to spend an extra 50 bucks in fuel and increase the net revenue for the day by a thousand, especially if one has to pay for pilot cars by the hour.
-
Don’t hesitate to tell SPD you need reimbursed and some add’l pay for saving them the money on a repair. And you saved yourself some down time since it’s a hassle to get most things fixed at a truck stop.
-
Ok, we save like $.25 a gallon by taking transport loads.
-
We don't burn near enough to be able to take advantage of that. We usually can take up to 2000 of off road delivered to the job site, but no where near a tanker load.
My luck, I'd save .25 per gallon on a tanker load and the next day the price would drop by .30!! -
There are many fuel discount programs available to single or small fleet that aggregate their volume to negotiate discounts.
That being said...
Large fleets have training issues, paperwork issues and fuel tax documentation issues that single truck or small fleets don’t generally experience.
By fueling through a predefined network they can reduce the gathering of paperwork - not an insignificant issue when you realize how paperwork even 10 trucks can generate on a daily basis. You can lose a lot of money via employee misuse/theft if you don’t keep a close watch on it.
The larger the fleet the more likely that the decision making in each truck will have a wide variance from excellent to unbelievably stupid. Wreckers cost a bunch of money....so do fuel island awnings and pumps and grandma’s station wagon. Plus running out of fuel searching for that just right Mom and Pop 10 miles of the interstate.
I know everyone thinks that large fleets are run by college graduates that know absolutely nothing and have trouble finding their way to their desk from the parking lot...but not all the smart people drive trucks and not all people that drive truck are smart.
I use a much different criteria for fueling....If i fit and can get in and out without a incident then that is a fuel stop for me...
I use fuel cards from NASTC(Fleetone) to receive fleet pricing at TA,Petro and AMBest sometimes plus it allows me to fuel at almost any location for a $2 fee. The plus is that the record keeping is simplified by their reporting. I also use a direct bill from Pilot Flying J to get a small discount from those locations - again I get quality reporting. In an emergency I can fuel anywhere via cash or credit...I have to then supply actual hard copies to my fuel tax auditor to keep my reporting accurate.
@Oxbow I hope this gives you a different side of the puzzle. -
How difficult are engine swaps?

Your situation is definitely different than ours. We are rarely big enough to where access is a concern.
My total expenditure for 2018 for on road fuel in our transport was $11,741.87, and our dump truck was only $1,999.82. We didn't use the dump truck much this year, and don't put very many miles on hauling our equipment as we tend to be on our bigger jobs for a couple of months at a time.
We spent $89,007.79 on off road fuel, def, and additives though (I just LOVE having to deal with def fluid in the equipment).
Our off road fuel expenditures are still only about 6.5% of our gross revenue, and short of buying a tanker load at a time like JD mentioned I don't know how to save on that expense.
Anyway, I'm getting out in the weeds here in regard to trucking, but have always wondered about the big fuel stop prices and the discounts fleets receive. Suffice it to say the Mom and Pop places around here will be getting our business in the foreseeable future!cke, SAR, snowman_w900 and 20 others Thank this. -

24 Week Numbers
Oh Lord, please save me from myself.
I know I am weak, and flawed.
I have a tendency to type stuff in places that would get me in trouble. And would make me look like a horrible person.
Guys - say a prayer for me. Don’t let me post anything here.cke, SAR, OLDSKOOLERnWV and 23 others Thank this.
