Is there any legal problem (anywhere in the US) with a load extending forward of the front of a 53' fifth-wheel trailer (as long as it is secured, doesn't snag the truck/lines, etc.)?
Overhanging load between truck and trailer, is it legal?

Some states like SC make you have a permit to over hang FT. 3ft. max with the 53ft, co I was leased on with bought a few to haul 60ft bar and some states were bad in the south I kept using a alum. 45ft spread and you could hang no more than 1/3 of total steel I beams off the back?

Check with all of the states you are going with any load that exceeds the front or rear of your trailer. Usually the front isnt a problem provided you check your states to be sure it's either a permit or none. And that you are aware of your turning etc.
Personally I don't have a issue with it, Ive seen it done. But sometimes in some areas it's under oversize flags etc. -
Typically they’re more interested in rear overhang and overall length.
I’d like to say ‘you’re all good’, but as said - check different state requirements.
Some Permits I order enquire as to front overhang on trailer, but not all.
I use heavyhaul.net for quick reference. Links to State websites. -
Yes every state has different rules i have an entire booklet that lists how much over hang u can have on each side... I run 60ft rebar on 53ft flats and stepdecks so i always need to know how much each state allows for overhang and if i need permits.... If u need a specific state i can upload some pictures from my bookletsLepton1 and blairandgretchen Thank this.

Good to know - I run an extendable flat, you get familiar with the laws pertaining to length after a while.Nothereoften and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

Thanks, all! I don't want to deal with permits so I'm just going to Tetris everything until it fits.

Don’t know where people got this info in this thread but there is no limit to length of load overhanging the front of the trailer. If you have a long wheelbase truck you can overhang as much as you can legally.
Only rear overhang has rules about it. Generally it’s 4ft without permit but you need a flag. This isn’t every state but most. -
Wrong ! every state allows certain front over hang over front of trailer and certain over back of trailer.. For example U can hang 10ft off back in cali without permit.. U cross border to az can only hang 4ft off back without permit... These are state regulations not something we have made up.. Please dont give wrong information to ppl... Pic is just a quick refernece guide of one of pages of my booklet that i have, if u want specific up to date info i would visit state websites
