Stepped back into the o/o game. My truck is a 4 axle and I’d like to get an APU so I don’t have to sweat all summer long while I’m sleeping, as well as to keep everything charged so I can just leave the fridge on all weekend. Do any of you have experience with mounting the APU on the deck plate behind the bunk? Curious if a new Tripac would be too noisy running there since my bunk does have a back window.

I’m not opposed to pulling the lift axle off, I just need to get running for a few months and see if it actually pays to keep it or not.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

I've seen them mounted sideways across the frame rails behind the sleeper a couple times (so the access doors open towards the trailer to check oil and to service). Not sure if TK makes a custom mounting kit for it or if these drivers had to get them made. One thing about Tripac apu's is they're relatively quiet as long as the exhaust is aimed away from the cab.

Would it make sense for your application to get a shorter fuel tank? Maybe a 120 instead of a 150 on that side (keep the 150 on the other)?
May not fit your use case, but an idea if you didn't think of it.

It already has short tanks. I bought the truck with the intention of pulling the axle off and selling it. Then I decided I at least wanted to run it for a while and see how it goes since you can permit 90k on 6 axles in KS now. I’m just brainstorming in case I decide to leave it on. I know I want an APU for sure no matter what.

Are you married to a diesel APU? You might have more flexibility with an EPU, I think?

Wouldn't be any worse than a reefer. Two immediate thoughts would be gap space, and watch having it to close to any exhaust parts. We had to reroute the exhaust on the new Cascadia because it was dumping heat and cooking the motors and alternators.

Those are ok for a 10 hour break, but on a 34 are worthless.

not if you do your 34's at home.... ;)!

But I agree. Not the solution for everyone, but we absolutely love ours.

yeah but he specifically said to run a fridge while at home.

I had a truck with a climacab. It was ok for us because we were home on weekends. Never would have lasted in a true OTR company.

Right, but four separate EPU batteries should keep a fridge cold for a weekend -- I am assuming? We're usually home for 3.5 days every week, so we turn ours off.
