Delivery times?

    Who sets the delivery times for company drivers does dispatch control this?

    People make promises to one another way above your control. Your job is the verification of legal delivery within the remaining HOS on your 70, trip planning distance remaining and a variety of other factors. If there is a problem you will know to say no it will not be there on that date and time. But always have a valid date and time it can be there legally to your dispatcher.

    Keep in mind people have worked hours if not days to arrange a load you are just now being told to take. You never run illegally (Anti corection laws) and you always make sure you change it to a later date and time to stay legal.

    It is a constant battle in your lifetime of trucking. In the old days we were told to be somewhere monday am at sunrise, call when empty. Now we are trying to be within 10 minutes across the USA. Most people cannot barely make it to their own doctor within 10 minutes across town. Not to mention the freight is NOT THAT vital. It's work, and yes it's good to have a date expected etc. Sometimes morning or night depending on customer's needs. But to the minute? That got somehow general across the industry about 30 years ago and it's been a royal problem.

    Finally if you did take the load, you will find your company checking your progress against a fleet average per day every morning. Those who fail to maintain 45 mph or whatever through the night and previous day will be told to call in and 'splain why they are now late.

    All depends. Where I work (refrigerated carrier, all food stuffs), maybe half are set by the shipper, and the rest are set by the customer rep/planner in the office. I can't remember the last time I had a load with a FCFS status. If something comes up and an appointment must be changed, often they have to let the customer/shipper do this, if the customer is the one who set it in the first place.

    Customer/s tells load planner this is your appointment, load planner says we can do that or this. Load planner says to dispatch to have the truck at customer for 1500 on Monday, dispatch tells driver to be at customer at 0800 Friday.
    Pretty simple.

    Seriously though, customers talk with the company and they agree on a time a truck can be there. Then its the drivers job to magically make it happen legally.

    No difference with company drivers vs. O/O or L/O.

    Although at Swift they don't like to give you the actual times that the load can be picked up or delivered. They try to run you as hard as possible on both ends.
    Pick it up quickly, and deliver even more so.

    Most loads have some leeway in the time windows, while some do not.
    For myself, I set my own times. If they are not within the customers times I do not take it. Simple.
    And yes, I am a company driver.

    I find many mistakes in actual delivery/pickup times. Find out when you get there.
    Your company has control. I know of one small company. He got out of reefer. Shippers making ridiculous demands on delivery times.
    I had one so tight. Shipper wasting 5 hours getting me out. I ran out of HOS. 40 minutes short of making delivery. Come to find out. Receiver refuses reefer at 5:15 in the morning. It was supposed to be 5:15pm. Only accepts reefer at night.

    The thing I don't understand is that they want you on time for your appointment but can take 8 hours to unload you.

    That right there is the biggest BullShart part of trucking. YOU have to honor their appointment times....They DO NOT have to honor their appointment times. Arrive at 09:45 for a 10:00 appt. get dock at 11:30 loaded at 13:00 don’t get paperwork until 14:00. **And yes get loaded or get unloaded are interchangeable.

    Aggravates me to no end, the driver is the only one who time ever seems to matter for.

    you'd be surprised how many of the appt. are made by dispatch to keep you moving at the rate they think is best.

    when I hired on to a smaller company, all of sudden all these appt became open window. lol.

    ever get someplace a little behind and apologize for being late and they say ,Oh we don't do appt here. lol

    Noticed anything involving a live unload will be rejected if you counter.

    Drop n hook have huge windows built in most of the time.

    True about real windows being hidden from the driver. I imagine o/o's get more transparancy.

    When I go independent live anything will be rejected whenever possible for these reasons.
