Last year, Mercer found a cracked shoe on my truck, I was kinda embarrassed as I thought I knew my truck very well. Just showed me I needed to get better and inspect from different angles and positions.JonJon78 Thanks this.

When you shut off the ignition the fuel shut off solenoid allows a spring loaded plunger to block the fuel flow. The plunger, a small piston, can get crusty or the spring washer can wear out. What engine do you have?
FrankPoleCrusher and thaistick Thank this. -
An ISX

Ok, got stopped for the night, pulled into the truck stop, it didnt turn off at all until I put it in gear. Cranked it up and tried again, same thing. Then I drove around the lot once, parked, and it turned right off like normal. Even odder was, after i had to turn it off by putting it in gear, the ABS light came on on the dash, but not the trailer..... wondering if I dont have a broken or dirty ground somewhere.
Edit: cranked it back up and it turned off like normal again.... hmmmmLast edited: Mar 1, 2019

The fuel shut off is on the left rear side of the block above the egr valve. Its near the fuel actuators and has a single wire. My truck will be back midday tomorrow and I'll send you a picture.
Everything you've mentioned describes a fuel shut off not shutting off and not an electrical problem. The good news is that its a cheap fix that anyone who knows which end of a screwdriver is which can do.
FrankJonJon78, Razorwyr, PoleCrusher and 2 others Thank this. -
fuel solenoid more than likely.Razorwyr and PoleCrusher Thank this.

I'm going to be home Wednesday, if it's just the fuel shut off, will it be ok until then and I can work on it at home or will I need to track one down this weekend?
I'm going to check the ground to the starter and the ignition relay as well tomorrow morning because that's 2 things I know how to check already and from what I've read tonight, what you've described and those 2 things are the 3 most common culprits of the problem.PoleCrusher Thanks this. -
It can wait until you get home. When mine started acting up I took the cover off the solenoid and put more of a wave in the spring washer to make it more "springy". That fixed it for about 2 weeks. I also needed to stall it to shut down the engine for a few days until I could get a new one.
Frankthaistick, PoleCrusher and Razorwyr Thank this. -
