    I couldn't find it in the FMCSA book but what makes a chain illegal to use in reference to its condition (IE. bent, cracked, stretched)? Would like to have a source for this info. I found a video on Youtube from Oregon DOT explaining this but would like to find a printed source.

    I am not being ticketed. There was an issue where I work where a person decided to get rid of 75% of the chains and binders that weren't his, due to his own rules based on appearance of the chain. The person lied about it twice now and wants other departments to pay for his idiotic misdeed and is also trying to say that we didn't need those chains and binders to begin with. I am fighting from having to pay for all new chains and binders and trying to get his department to pay for them. Many $$$. That pretty much sums it up.

    The condition of your chains probably has a lot to do with the discretion of whoever is looking at them...

    I generally dispose of chain when any of the links show weakness or when the welds on them get worn.

    Ive generally been blessed with good chain in my time. I don't know anything about them as far as technical stuff. But if they look good, they should work good.

    Load em up enough in working force the weakest link will snap first.

    And that is the problem. This was in reference to what Booley stated.

    This is what I was looking for.
    National Association of Chain Manufacturers' Welded Steel Chain Specifications, dated September 28, 2005.4

    We put the chains on the load and they stay there till the trailer is done. Years, not days.

    Sounds like he may be having a sale at another location.....?

    We had a dishonest electrician at EZ. If his buddy needed a breaker box, he would buy 2 for a job, then sell one of them for 50% off. He sold many many things like that. World is full of them.
