what upgrades have any of you done to gain better MPG. Which ones are you best investment in your opinion ?

    Mine are
    *Driving slower (free)
    *Trailer closer to cab (free)
    *Mega flow walker muffler ($85)
*I’m sure changing would have worked but I deleted egr, boosted to 550HP and swapped 14l turbo with 12.7 (got a Detroit s60) ($2200) gained a lot in mpg and black smoke stopped coming out my exhaust.
*fuel cleaner. I use marvel mystery oil and diesel kleaner about to try “fuel power”. I buy them at Walmart fuel power at love’s makes my engine sound a lot better

Any tires good tires ? I got new Goldshield Chinese tires on my drives and good year fuel max on steers. Looking to change the drives.

Do exhaust manifold work ? Those two are really expensive options so trying to get more info.

Any good cheap ones ? Or other you’d recommend ?

I’m a fleet mechanic so here’s how I break it down
First thing, look for anything loose or making noise. Loose suspension, doors, body panels, etc, If it’s vibrating (or making noise) it’s wasting energy.

Make sure the truck gets cleaned, clean radiator, clean frame rails, fix oil leaks, etc

Then make sure everything is adjusted correctly (brakes not to tight, wheel bearings not to loose, maintain the over head correctly.

Finally, verbally abuse the driver just enough to get him to slow down, but not enough to quit or go to HR..... it’s a delicate process!!!

I installed fleet air foam filters for.2mpg increase - better airflow.

I’d suggest better rolling resistance tires on the drives.

I put the full tilt manifold on, and BW turbo at same time. Definite performance increase.

Sample your oil to monitor engine health/silicon and soot issues.

Calculate tank to tank fuel, monitor closely.

    Reduce idling.

Drive on foot unless dead flat ground.

Install pyro and boost to ‘learn’ better habits.

Kenworth & Cummins both cite Steering Corrections Per 100-miles.

    Best shocks, zero slop.

You want to keep your boost and pyro temps as low as possible because the only thing that makes them go up is burning more fuel. To get the best fuel economy on hills, you want to be In a gear and driving at a speed that would allow you to accelerate if you wanted to.

Hi Greggg, I know that this post is almost 3 years old but what kind of mpg increase did swapping the 14L to a 12.7L turbo get you? Was the 12.7 turbo a VGT or fixed vane with wastegate?
