Nothing wrong with overkill in my book.
    It beats the alternative everytime.

This was a few years back...we were very limited on where we could and couldn't strap...one big long pipe, actually, smoke stack that had a spiral flange welded around the outside so when the stack was raised, it would self-stabilize in extreme wind...5 or 6 truck loads...chains on the front and back (which has already been nicely suggested) did the trick. A few belly wrapped straps and then others for show....rode from north eastern WI, just south of Greenbay to the Goodyear rubber plant in Oklahoma. Part of a new smog scrubber they were installing. Didn't move on the trailer the entire way. Great paying load too. If I could figure out how to include photos, I'd put them up here...

Good idea, but not regular enough to warrant. Loads are always different.

I don’t mind a little carpentry to make something work - but not so keen when it’s an issue that they should be addressing, isn’t of pawning off the expense of time/materials/labor on me.
