Then again, people still run into stopped police vehicles with pulsing lights. It's a wonder why they don't keep some kind of a siren on... they alert others when moving but not when stopped. :error:

maybe also, with the wave of new tech, like in many of the newer cars, suv's, with automatic braking, lane alert, isn't there now "some sort" of radar device that warns drivers they are too close to the vehicle in front?

i never drove a truck with that device.

here it is, i had to re-think the name.

I have it on my company truck its called ON GUARD But that shouldn't be the issue. The issue is people including "professional drivers" are to f### ing addicted to there phones they think 3 seconds of looking at it won't make a difference WELL IT DOES!! Including the intermodal driver on i80 this morning near LaSalle Illinois who couldn't keep it in one lane ####### ####### almost put me in the ditch!!

How about everyone just do one job at a time. The old saying of "can't walk and chew gum at the same time" has now turned into "can't drive and play with the phone at the same time".

The problem and it's consequences are incredibly easy to solve. It could be done with a few key strokes at any of the several mobile phone manufacturers, Samsung, LG, Apple, etc.
Every mobile device out there has a built in GPS receiver. They send out an update(which they do all the time) which disables the device if the GPS detects motion say above 5 mph, walking speed.
Of course it will never happen. It would destroy the very reason the devices are so popular in the first place. The public wouldn't stand for it. Pick on small groups, like truck drivers, but clearly the message that it is dangerous hasn't resonated with this group either.
Just don't do it yourself, and try to operate as defensively as possible when the inevitable happens, someone hits you who is distracted.

Having driven a few trucks with this tech on it, I have come to the conclusion that it creates more hazards than it prevents. On my current truck, it likes to slam on the brakes whenever it thinks I'm about to run into a bridge overpass. I wish I could convince them to take it off my truck, but I don't think they will. It sucks.

i have forgotten the formula, about speed, and miles traveled in x amount of time, like when one has a "nano" or "micro sleep" when behind the wheel...let alone looking down at a phone for 3 seconds.

Yes it is a pain in the ### but if they won't shut off their phones while driving I think its worth it
