AOBRD's can be set up in various way as the company sees fit... Ex. Doesnt put you on the drive line until you have travel 3 miles... Or gone over 25 mph... Or how ever the company sets it up.
ELDs put you on the drive line the second vehicle goes over 5 mph. Company has no say in this.
This is the biggest difference as far as how it will affect the driver, IMO.
There are many other differences as well but that is the one that I hate the most.WildTiger1990 and mitmaks Thank this. -
To make it even more simple
AOBRD is more "flexible" with the data that comes from the ECM.
ELD is very precise on what it wants from the ECM and how it reports it.
Automatic OnBoard Recording Device
Electronic Log Device.
I wont even screw you up with EOBRD
Also, if you have a manual trans, it is more forgiving on movement vs an auto. I have had a lot of my customers give me feedback on this. Drivers are fighting for a clutch again.... LOL -
Both AOBRD and ELD devices are designed to automatically record a driver's duty status.
An AOBRD functions as dictated by the device manufacturer and can have parameters changed.
An ELD functions as dictated by the FMCSA and cannot have any parameters changed.
In December, all drivers that are required to maintain a RODS must begin using an FMCSA-approved ELD. AOBRD's will only be lawful for drivers who are not required to maintain a RODS. -
What is a RODS?

At present, if a commercial vehicle is cited for failure to have any recording device connected to the engine, who gets fined, the driver, the company, or both?
