To most it's just a paid day off.

Actually approx. 93' long pulling a 53' and no permit is required.
I believe your correct on over length but only a few states like Indiana, Florida, maybe Virginia
But none of them in force it. And no one gets permits in big houses for over length. Though Ive heard a few do for Florida.
Wish I knew a lot more as I believe eventually the states will start using it to make some money and I don't want to donate.

Back in the 70's, before Georgia has scales, the cops would set up in the rest area, especially at Carnesville on 85. Their sole purpose was to catch trucks over 55' length, which was the length law there at that time.

Since most trailers were 45' by that time, and most any cabover tractor had a wheelbase longer than 144", they nabbed almost every truck on the road. The day they caught me they were running two or three 12 passenger vans back and forth to the jail/magistrate office to pay the $50.00 fine.

They wrote each person's name down in a ledger book, and by 11:00 am, there were hundreds names in it. I know because the policeman showed me the ledger while I was waiting on the van ride to the pokey.

They had two guys holding a tape measure as you stopped, then they waved you over to the parking area to try and find an open spot.

There have always been different money traps for different states, that was Georgia's.

I disagree. For me it's a day of remenbrance and celebration of those memories. No mourning for me. But I get what you're saying.

Florida's law is complicated. Its 75 oal if your kpra length is over x feet when pulling a trailer over y feet. might want to look the law up because they absolutely do enforce it. If you got sliding axles on the trailer you should be ok as long as you remember to slide them up when heading down here.

I would agree, but I guess it depends on your experiences. We were lucky everytime I went overseas and we never lost anyone, nor has anyone in my family died in combat. Some injuries, but no death. To me, it's a celebration of those who were willing to sacrifice, but I can easily understand how to some it's a day of mourning, especially if they have lost someone personal to them.

A Mercer flatbed driver who delivered to the same job site that I delivered to this morning in Colorado dropped his loaded trailer to Bobtail home in Cheyenne over the weekend... Dropped a loaded trailer with roofing materials on asphalt the trailer Sunk to the point it twisted the frame on the trailer.. Now he left an unintended loaded trailer sitting in front of a school where they are are getting ready to replace the roof.... It's One of the new Fontaine trailers that Mercer is buying...... A manage to get the trailer lifted up with the forklift to get backup under it by he twisted the trailer to the point that the left front corner sits up higher than the right front corner drastically...

Now it's a 150 miles to Cheyenne from this... Here is a picture of the trailer sitting on the street..
