Safeway DC in Denver. Ran by Mexicans. I had a 2230 appt that I couldn't make because a blizzard blew and shut down I-80 and I-25, well company told me appt was rescheduled for 1900 next day, I get in 1445 and the tell me to come back at 1800, I come back at 1745, they take my paperwork and let me sit and sit and sit. I wait about 2 hrs and go in and ask, the little mexican girl can barely speak english goes in and asks and says I haven't baan called yet. I wait another 2 hrs, this time I skip the lumper girl and go into the office. I ask how much longer. I tell them the situation. They say because I missed my appointmant that I'm on stand by and 7 of the other drivers showed up this morning. I told them it wasn't my fault the highway was closed but they refused to listen and finally got a door at 0040 and finally got out of there at 0338. Total crap

I have had receivers pull this trick, and I have developed a solution that I learned working in waste services and hauling scrap metal that has yet to fail me (and utterly confuse such hapless and self-serving customers at the same time!).

When a receiver refuses skids, wrap, dunnage, etc., I pull out a Bill of Lading and begin to fill it out, describing the articles as used shipping implements for scrap, asking them to list the number of pieces, weight, and so on, finally asking who the intended receiver is, and most importantly, whether the freight charges are prepaid.

I do this with dead-pan seriousness and fill out an actual bill.

When they balk, I carefully explain to them that my carrier's a transportation company whose function is to transport material goods from point to point, and if they want us to take the dunnage with us when we leave, we will be taking it to the place they specify for a fee. I then explain to them that the dunnage is part of the shipment and is, upon receipt, their property. Having my carrier cart them away for a fee is no different than paying a roll-off waste services company to haul away, for example, waste wood in the form of broken pallets.

For some reason, explaining it to them in this way helps them grasp the nature of the transaction.

Anheuser-Busch league products are a royal pain in the butt. They don't care how the products are loaded. Just get it delivered on-time with no delays (even if they delay you)!!

Wal-Mart is about the worst. They don't care about their own loads!!

Better stop, I'm getting mad again!!

I guess that is why I get up set with the younger drivers that think it is ok for them to do wrong if they get away with it.
Wrong is wrong and how can we ever teach our children the way to live right if we set such a bad example in our every day dealings. No mater what the outher person does that is bad or wrong. My moma always said 2 wrongs never make anything right.

Anheuser Busch does care how things are loaded, if you are overweight or over gross, they always fix it for you, bills wont print on overgross loads...and deliveries can always be changed.

    Rite-Aid, Charlotte, NC.

Picked up a realy at our terminal 3 miles away. 6AM appt. No problem.

I get there at 0530. There's another truck parked in the turn lane outside the place. Gates are not opened yet, so I pull in behind him.

0605, they open the gate. 0620, they finally get me to the dock, where I am informed it will take "all day". To be fair, it was a load with a lot of different items. But all day?

Anyway, the lumper comes out. $500.

    FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS!

About 4 hours later, he comes out. "Am I done?" I ask.

"No", he says. "The receivers have to check it all in now that we've separated and repalletized it".

I got out at 1515 with a promise to never go back.

My vote goes to Melon1, Arabi, GA and Hamilton, NJ. They are looking for free refer storage and their melons are infested with an aggresive fungus. They will guarantee you east warehouse to warehouse freight. Then they will take hours to load you and refuse to unload you. My cargo insurance carrier finally stept in, salvage value on the load was $750. If five days, a lot of headache, and losing money is your idea of fun try Melon1!!!
