im a flatbedder running for COTC. I’m trying to get away from these lumber loads and tarping every load I see lone star does a lot of bigger freight and dosent seem like they haul lumber which is great their pay seems to be around the same idk? Anyone work there?? Would it be best for me to leave cotc making 80k a year?? I could getting into big freight which pays more right? You don’t tarp big loads yay! Benefits seem to be pretty much the same only you don’t get free health at lone star.
Lone star or central Oregon?

I don't know about Lone Star but there are oversize loads that need to be tarped. Some of the odd-ball stuff the guys have posted in the HH forum would make tarping a load of lumber look like childs play.MrEd, QuietStorm, Lepton1 and 3 others Thank this.

I didn’t think LoneStar paid that good.....

Anyone hear of long haul trucking? Talked to a guy who has a friend says he makes more at long haul then when he was at central Oregon. They have an employee stock program and a 401k vacation looks hell of a lot better 2 weeeks at one year goes up to 4 weeks paid after 5 years drivers make up to 111000!!! And they have conastoga

You need to figure out what you want to do.
Lone star tarps plenty and they do bigger loads.
Longhaul does zero oversize because they are a 100% QuickDraw fleet.QuietStorm and TripleSix Thank this. -
Some of the big loads are a pain, did I say a pain to tarp. lol
Lepton1 Thanks this. -
LoneStar pay sucks to COTC, I’ve talked to plenty of there seasoned drivers. If tarping lumber loads is to much work for you, look at Long Haul or some of the Russian carriers out of Chicago with curtain trailers. Sorry, hate to break it to, but lumber loads are some of the easiest tarp jobs in the flatbed industry.QuietStorm and kylefitzy Thank this.

Is long haul any good

You are correct, sir. Tarping the big loads have to be done. You can make more money tarping a big load than what most drivers make in a week. 1 tarp load.
“But Six, I don’t like tarping.”
I don’t like tarping or dragging those big heavy chains. But it pays money. Some of us are paid for what we know as well as what we do. And despite possibly being out in crappy weather, when you get into that cab to freshen up after securing and gift wrapping that load...you smile. You’re proud of the job. Your job. It should be a matter of pride, whether it’s a tarp load or not.
Years ago, I heard a young guy tell a group of drivers that he wanted to pull flats. They instantly talked him out of it. Yes, the dreaded TARP. Scariest thing imaginable to the fair weather, limp wrist sidewalk sissy driver. Everything that they know about open deck is always worse case. They sit in the background lurking and shudder with fear every time someone mentions that 4 letter word. TARP! Smell that? Someone sh@t their pants.
Everyone wants to heavy haul, but no one wants to flat. @kylefitzy, show them the tarp pics so they can run in terror.
Six back quiet.Last edited: Jun 14, 2019
