Thinking miles is a drivers thing. If you are an owner, think money per load and learn how to manage dh and expenses.

I try to be!! I gave up looking cool on my stool a long time ago!! I really look to book the best paying load for the shortest length of haul!! I maybe do one trip a week that’s longer than 5 or 6 hundred miles!! That one load is my direct freight!! I try to maximize so I don’t turn around and come straight back I do day runs till I’m ready to come back home!! For anywhere from 12 to 19 hundred do I always get top dollar hell no but I #### sure try to squeeze out every penny I can

That's the trick, set up your financial timing to where you can hit it hard when rates are good, then when rates drop you can afford to take it easy instead of having to be a crab in a bucket racing poonjab for $1.15/mile, wearing yourself and the truck out just to keep afloat

A little racist are we .....I bet the Punjab is probably getting better rates then you think and more then likely using a "Punjab" broker that he has a develped relationship with .....as a group to they have a tendency to frequent businesses within thier cultural circle at least that is what my dad taught me growing up .....

I try to figure what the bottom line is after fuel and after extra time involved. I can’t always run 200 mile trips for $500-$600.Doing One trip a day leaves me with $380-$480 after fuel. Not enough, instead I’ll run 1100-1300 miles in 2 days, for $2100-$2700, I’ll make $700-$1000 a day after fuel cost. Then depending on the time of year, I’ll try to make as close to the same again, back home, usually less, but sometimes more. Sometimes, I’ll bounce back, due to long haul rates being too low, I’ll do 2 one day trips. sometimes I’ll head out of my lane, then get the $2.59-$3.00 pm short trip home. I’ll add all revenue and miles, getting an overall average. I don’t have any great knowledge, just go for the best I can find. It’s a crapshoot at best. But usually averages out pretty good. As far as DH, I’m careful about DH in the wrong direction, it’s easy to work an extra 4 hrs and run an extra 300 miles for a net after fuel of only $200. Roughly speaking, I won’t DH in wrong direction 150 miles for a load paying $300 more. I will DH in the right direction for a load paying $100 less at a higher pm rate, before I haul a cheap and heavy for peanuts. Rarely if there’s no DH and it’s going home, I’ll grab it, bite the bullit. And get another good load from home. I try my best to keep a thumb on the same loads, so when I need one they’ll remember me. Usually stick with the same 5-8 different Brokers. They all know Me.
