How do most moose bumpers affect fuel economy? How many mpg's would one lose? How much weight would you gain?

(I'm thinking of traditional moose bumpers such as those offered by Mik Mak and Ali Arc.)

I run one of the heaviest models available (Herd super texas road train with oversized tubes and a rake) which comes in right about 600 lbs with frame mount.

I didn't notice any loss of fuel mileage when I put mine on, but I was already screwed in regards to aerodyamics running a Flat Top W9 with stacks and external breathers pulling a cattle pot.

Well consider a nice hood costs $17,000 to replace I think a moose gaurd is a good thing if you drive a ,359,379,389, or w900.

I guess you need to figure out if the bumper is a necessity or just show. I ran the biggest bumper Magnum in Canada made on my Western Star 4900EX. I ran to and from Alaska. To me it was a must have. My fuel average for 370000mls was 5.5mpg. The bumper weighed about 500lbs. In my operation fuel economy was not the most important factor, but I worked hard to get the 5.5mpg.

After hitting my first moose at about 60mph in Northern BC the bumper was paid for and any fuel economy loss was made up for. Towing would have been over $5000.00 plus another $35,000 in repairs to the truck and not even thinking of downtime and being a 1000mls from home.

The next three Cariboo and deers where all free after the first hit. It will save your hood in a truck stop too.

I am a fan of big strong racks up front frame mount. The fuel economy is nil. Not affected enough to matter.

Now if you did not see Mr El Toro in time to stop in the night and rack up 20,000 on up in damaged tractor or worse because you did not have a rack up front.. tsk.

The best one I believe for my truck anyway is a Herd and they are expensive. I can get over that but not the estimated 600 lbs they claim. I would put one on in a millisecond if I could. The 600 lbs is huge. I can only gross 46,500 now. Can’t imagine 45,900.

I'm guessing that you're limited to the US 80,000lb limit and the 46,500 is the cargo weight?
