I just last week graduated from driving school. I was all set, or so I thought, to go out with my trainer for Knight Transportation this weekend. Even though they had my application and paperwork for weeks, they then started asking for verification of my employment for the last 3 years. Being new, I didn't know about this requirement until graduating. The very reason I wanted my CDL and to become a trucker was the recent stability of the trucking industry itself. I worked for Michelin for years. About 5 years ago, I had a work-related injury due to faulty equipment. They got very creative and found a way to get rid of me even though I did everything by the book.
Ever since, I have a struggled finding decent employment. I had a horrible streak of employers that never followed through with their promises. My point is, my employment has been very erradic since leaving Michelin.
The DOT, according to Knight, would not give me clearance. You mean to tell me that someone who is looking to improve their life and find steady, stable employment in the trucking industry can't find a job? How bout someone who has been retired for over 3 years then wanted to become trucker. If they haven't had verifiable employment over the last 3 years they're out of luck? This is hard to believe. I desperately need help as to if I'm missing something or if there is something I can do? Otherwise, I have just spent $6,000+ for a license for no reason. Please give me some kind of hope.
Will DOT let me become a trucker...

1) If any part of the driving school involves interstate commerce (And most schools do) a DQF should have been completed at the beginning. Included in the file is an application which you would have had to show your previous employers, so you would have known they had to be disclosed.
2) The “DOT” does not give a company “clearance” for you to be hired.Chinatown, MachoCyclone, tscottme and 2 others Thank this. -
They are required by regulation to verify any employment or unemployment for the specified time period. Someone at Red Swift is spinning tales. You didn’t elaborate much about Michelin but my guess is they didn’t like it. Unless you went on a drug binge or drove into a building you are fine.
Go send out applications to companies that hire new drivers that you would actually want to work at. They too will require the 3 year check so make sure all the employed/unemployed time periods are listed.
Post your desired location so members can suggest companies. @Chinatown is always a good resource. -
Thank you for replying so quickly. The exact words from my recruiter and her boss at Knight was that DOT would not accept my last 3 years of non-consecutive employment and would not "clear" me for employment. As for a DQL, not sure what that is and never signed one that I know of at either Knight or Swift Driving Academy in Memphis. Again, not sure what my recourse is and where and how to proceed.

See above and post your location.

Turn in your tax forms for the last three years. Also retirement counts I’m retired and didn’t have any problems.
Dan.S, buddyd157 and FlaSwampRat Thank this. -
just get up a couple maybe 3 letters form people in your city/town that know you, like a minister, doctor, maybe even a lawyer. all they have to do is say they know you and that for what they know the past 3 years you had "scattered employment"
also, what you need to do is gather up your previous tax returns for the previous 3 years.
then seek employment with maybe a trash hauler, or other company.
they only want you to account for those last 3 years, like that you were not in jail.
best of luck to youNavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Thanks for responding. I'm in the Columbia, South Carolina area. They basically told me if I wasn't able to show 3 consecutive years of being employed, they couldn't hurt me due to DOT regulations. One of my employees during this period owed me thousands in sales commissions and wouldn't pay me. He recently refused to even verify my employment and would never even give me a 1099. I would probably be better off to just say I was unemployed since leaving Michelin. This is turning into a nightmare otherwise.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

They are wrong, plain and simple. Here is the regulation:
(4)Exception. For drivers with no previous employment experience working for a DOT-regulated employerduring the preceding three years, documentation that no investigation was possible must be placed in the driver investigation history file, after October 29, 2004, within the required 30 days of the date the driver's employment begins.
If you want to read the full regs you can go here:
49 CFR § 391.23 - Investigation and inquiries.
You shouldn’t have any trouble finding work near Columbia, SC. Do you prefer long haul reefer jobs?Chinatown, Dan.S, GamecockBill and 1 other person Thank this.
