Currently a semi-new driver working at Schneider doing OTR. Switched from the local account to OTR and boy was I dumb for doing that!

OTR pay is .42 per mile right? However, 200-400 miles per load. I am banking 500-600$ a week. Local was $900 flat rate per week.

Wouldn't you think Otr should be making more than their local guys? That's what I thought.

Now here's my question: what should I do now? Look for another gig?

JB hunt has a hold on some local accounts and said their drivers make 1,575 a week before taxes. That's non-NYC. I would be waiting for a spot to open.

Should I bite? Or is that number too good to be true?

Another company said their drivers make .42cpm OR $1,400 a week but you have to do 2,200 miles regional and work 5 1/2 days. That's PMT. I have seen a lot of bad marks on PMT as well.

What are your thoughts guys ? Any tips you can give me on how to handle my situation?

    Thank you!

Wow $300 - $400 less a week, but hey at least you get to sleep in a truck and eat from a truck stop.

Yeah I don't understand the logic either. I thought I would be making more money taking this job.

If that's the case I would have taken the local over OTR or went with another company. tell them you want local back or they can't look elsewhere 600 weekly is horrible no matter how you look at it.

200-400 miles per load isn't really OTR. It's more regional or short-haul. If you're only getting .42 per mile I would be looking for another job because there are a lot of companies starting new drivers well over 50 cents per mile. If you were getting say 2,500 miles a week, you would have been making a little over $1,000 a week at that per mile rate.

Rule #1 never work at a fompany until you talk to drivers on that account. Ads are useless

Yeah it's OTR, but the miles have been terrible since day one. That and the truck has broke down at least once a week (have done this for 4 weeks now).

I think the op is talking about being a new driver out of school. Big difference from rates quoted for new drivers with experience, usually 1 year or better.

And to think I used to run on half that whatever the truck did.

I preferred OTR work two day delivery minimum With some very small exceptions depending on freight type and routine. Medicines would go Memphis Detriot reload back to Memphis ASAP and back, it is OTR. Now if I went 200-400 miles and then sit or worse break down weekly, I would not want it anymore. I cannot and must not have a sick truck on one hand and sitting around at someone's beck and call.

The money will take care of itself. Just put aside savings always no matter what it is. It rains some time and burns your bones other times. Those are the times your savings will carry you through.

No way would I consider going from one bottom feeder company ( Schneider ) to another ( JB Hunt ) :biggrin_25512:
