Laid off from IT looking into CDL

Man I can seem to find anything I like I the SE Florida area....

 

Local, regional, or OTR?

Local near any large city might be a challenge if you don't want to lump beer, soda, or food in a delivery route.

 

Yeah they don't want to pay.

 

Exact same boat as you IT support out of Dallas 10 years. It was like jumping from one sinking ship to another as they say. Even when the decent permanent gig out in the field landed in my lap.. The micromanagement.. Meetings.. Mind games were still there.. Impossible to be healthy and have good self esteem in that environment.

A year in trucking this month and I have never been happier professionally. Go for it 100% You have the mental toughness to get it done easily.. Tolerance built up from years of abuse and disrespect in toxic office environments. We used to joke about having PTSD from that line of work.

 

I wonder how often they have an emergency , do you know if this is common ?

If you are doing OTR in 2019 you need to be **grossing** at least $1100 a week. In terms of cents per mile for box van I wouldnt settle for anything under 48 cents a mile. In terms of per diem, companies should be crediting you 100% $66 per day ($462 per wk if your running). Anything short of this and your probably getting played by the company.

 

and for flatbed drivers should be getting at least 55 cents a mile or $1200 a week.

 

"my hope is to be able to make $45k-$52k a year", "Ive seen $35k for a first year driver". You cant compare the salary of OTR vs a regular job because OTR is much more demanding that other jobs. Therefore you must be paid more. For dryvan 1st year in 2019 you should gross at least $1100 a week minimum. Anything and your being under paid.
