Investigators detail harrowing I-70 crash that killed 4 as judge advances case toward trial
This story was published almost a month ago, but it has some interesting details I hadn't seen here before. For example, he says he applied his emergency brake and it had no effect.
Also, there's apparently dashcam video of the truck passing a Colorado State Patrol vehicle.
Also, a couple told police that the driver apparently was driving 70 to 80 mph in a 45 mph no passing zone to pass their car while going through Rand, Colorado. If true, that confirms that he took the dumb route from his shipper, and it also indicates that he was generally a terrible driver before his brakes failed.
I apologize if I'm beating a dead horse, but this one really bothers me, obviously. The one in Indianapolis does, too.

I can’t fathom how someone facing those serious charges is allowed to leave the state on bail. How the F isn’t he a flight risk? He’s sitting down in Texas within hours of the border and facing decades in prison.
Be interesting as more facts come to light during the proceedings. Isn’t looking like the driver has a bright future though one way or another... -
Hopefully judge familiar with well known paradox - Older people will underestimate speed of sport car and overestimate speed of big truck.
Younger people doing exactly opposite. They think big trucks are slower.Bud A. Thanks this. -
A guy working at the TA in Eugene told me there were two CDL schools in Canada recently shut down / busted for just handing out CDL's for like $20K a pop.
I believe it. There's some people that have 0 business in a big truck. -
I believe it to. I'd bet a lot of that "CDL for sale" stuff happens here in the US as well. The governor of Illinois was busted for that several years ago.Studebaker Hawk, HoneyBadger67, D.Tibbitt and 4 others Thank this.

If I hear a reporter toss around the word harrowing I might just stack the used copies under the stake to properly light it.
Even if the brakes fail etc etc etc.
That lawyer who spectulated it probably has zero experience with modern braking systems in 18 wheelers.
Ive been away from this subject too long. I do not expect much else either death or life without parole. -
20k is a lot of money, especially how easy getting a cdl is... but I guess if you can't learn you gotta pay the price!D.Tibbitt, Bud A. and lovesthedrive Thank this.

Sad all around that people feel they must cheat instead of knowing the thrill of actually studying. Granted, trying to back around cones is alot harder than the real thing.
-
It was even more so when the DOT officer was watching you back in and around said cones when you checked out to get your CDL!D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

You should go in Chicago in one of the drug testing places. Guys just coming here from Eastern Europe not speaking a word of English and they have CDLs.
It's obvious some kind of human trafficking and identity switching is going on. And it's not just a guy here, a guy there. It's dozens and dozens, day after day week after week..Lepton1, D.Tibbitt, drvrtech77 and 3 others Thank this.
