Old Pete evaporator cleaning

    D596B60E-861A-4B2E-B8D3-CE3D669CDC80.jpeg how do the old pete 359 and 379 owners clean the crud and gunk off the AC evaporator? I sprayed a can of brake clean through the expanded metal mesh this aft. Seemed to clean the outside at least. @woreout @Largecar359

    Looks almost identical to the setup in my W900A. I tossed all of that in the garbage though lol. I'd suggest maybe blowing it out with compressed air?

    If the heater core is installed the same way as my W900 then its not a terrible job to remove it if you were to pinch off the supply and return hoses to save draining the coolant. Then you could give the heater core a good wash and have better access to blow out the evaporator core.

    Why toss it?? Those things were built to last 100 years back then.

    Evaporator was already gone and the heater core was pretty rough looking. I'm planning on going with a compete hvac system from Vintage Air but with rooftop condensor because old skool.

    Tried taking mine out in a 95 379. Union was frozen - wound up with a new evaporator. Wasn’t cheap.

    The old one had a good quarter inch of nasty stuck to it. No wonder it wasn’t effective.

    Coil cleaner and a hose may get some out - I was annoyed at the lack of access to the thing.

    And change the cab filter out regular!

    Pretty sure there is no cab filter on this ‘86. I may hack one in though.

    Compressed air didn’t do anything. Local parts store didn’t have coil cleaner. A can of Brake kleen improved air flow quite a bit but Now im high as a kite.

    Try some citrus clean?
    @blairandgretchen if gunk was only stuck to your old one, couldnt you have soaked it or something?

    Remove both cores. if one is blocked and dirty the other is too. Soak them in Simple green and flush with warm water. No need for tons of pressure. A garden hose with a nice mist or fan works great. Blow dry with compressed air from about 6 inches away. Shine a light through to check for clear.

    Newer aluminum cores are prone to leakage after cleaning. I agree copper cores are durable and wouldn't hesitate to clean them.
