Truck parking

so buying $300 worth of fuel and paying for their overpriced junk inside their truckstop is not enough? greed is a hell of a drug

 

What I would love to see is the truck stops put in "convenience" stops or maybe glorified rest areas. Some states have been rumbling about letting the rest areas go private business for a while now, so why not?

Let the truck stop take over those areas, but make it more like a service plaza on a toll road... but with a load more parking for us. What comes to mind for me it the plaza's that are on I-80 in Ohio. Couple of fuel spots, (most) have lots of spaces and then a driver area. (few showers, tv, etc...) or the Truck parking area in Abingdon, VA (with some driver amenities)

I personally don't like trucks stops... Never have. But then I don't have a need for one most days due to the company having a ton of yards for me to park/shower/fuel/etc... and the fact that I bring what I need with me for the week I'm out. But some days I can't park at a company yard, so I find the nearest rest area and hunker down for the night.

I guess what I'm saying is parking doesn't have to be a complete money maker. If I was able to have what I needed in my truck and use the shower/bathroom or something like this, I'd be willing to maybe spend a few (MODEST) bucks to park and shower.

If someone needs to find a place to eat, then look elsewhere, but by saying a smelly, dirty, nasty truckstop has to be in every little town across the US, then of course people are going to get upset and fight against it. People don't fight against a rest area, so why not compromise and make more truck friendly areas.

My only problem with all of this is, of course money... The people footing the initial bill are going to charge out the wazoo to make sure they make the money back for the investors. To me though, this is a LONG term problem, and they want a SHORT term solution... Can't have both without some give and take.

Call me disillusioned I guess, but to me some thing like this is a no brainer. This is more about parking than money. They (everyone) gets enough of our money as it is, how about spending some of it and giving back.

 

First pay for showers, now pay-for-parking, next there's going to be a credit card swiper on the crappers......

I've never liked to park at truck stops, at all, but I do need some of their fuel, and their crappers...

In 10 years, with electric trucks, the point will become moot as the trucks will have to pay to plug in to charge....

 

You guys need to realize, a lot of the parking shortage is caused by "at-home drivers" parked at the truck stops near cities and large towns for 4+ days, or the weekends. Their needs to be more lots who accept monthly and longer term daily parking drivers. Every driver has to go home at some point, and not every driver has a local terminal to utilize. So just accommodating the at-home drivers where possible would be a huge help to the overall parking situation for the working drivers.

If a driver has available to them a place that charges reasonable rates to park long term but they refuse because "it costs too much", then they need to turn in their truck and take a long walk off a short pier.

You're seeing more and more of these places pop up here and there, and hopefully the trend will accelerate but these property lots must be properly done or will be a waste of space.

They need to be

• gated and locked access [or otherwise controlled]
• need to be accessible and safe even after heavy rains
• Plowed in snow areas after significant snow
• Have a reliable on-site tenant as "security"
• Have good security video system
• have an office/site manager who answers the phone and is not an idiot
• Have reasonable monthly rates where private vehicle can be left, and with covered parking offered at premium rates
• Offer a separate area with daily/weekly rates for infrequent drivers

No driver or truck owner wants to be forced to leave their truck to be hit in a busy truck stop for a week or more, but what options do they have? But then again, a large number of drivers are just pricks (at work and during off time) and refuse to pay to park, no matter the situation. These need to be dealt with some how. Have a pay-to-park-extended policy and enforce these policies and tow or boot their trucks will be a start. Force them to seek out other parking options when at home

 

If the truckstop owners are complaining about not being able to charge for parking, they should direct their ire at the carriers and not the drivers.

A company driver doesn’t pay for fuel and other business expenses, and shouldn’t have to pay for parking.

Most carriers don’t want to pay parking expenses and tell their drivers to utilize free parking.

 

I pay for parking. Everywhere I can. It's nice knowing I have a spot when I pull up.

 

Just park at the pumps like everyone else . Don't worry about paying for parking.

 

Probably yes , don't forget that as owner you need to pay land taxes, higher insurance etc

 

I can see where that would be an advantage. Especially if your clock is getting close.

 

I buy a spot hours and hours before I get there.
Don’t care what anyone says or thinks. With all the BS we have to deal with parking is always a big one. Knowing I have a spot is a good feeling.
You’ll never see me on a ramp or any place you can fit a truck.
