Thanks AModel: I will have to reread that a few times.
Did a little work on my buddies 72" JD zero turn. It is a diesel but DPF? Yes it has one.
Needed to test my work so I mowed the lawn. That is an awesome mowing machine DPF or not. I am still just stuck on a lawn mower has to have DPF.
While driving through the state of Jefferson I came across a truck that appeared to be dying. It was crawling up the grade and smoking like it had a bad turbo. No just a regen and it came back to life. How do the emissions test at that time and how many miles running clean did that counteract?

EGR failures tend to cost a lot to repair because of the damage to other components. I'm not sure they are less expensive.

I'm surprised. I thought the first generation egr was more "entry level" and basic than say the DEF and later iterations. No?

What components are damaged with a egr failure?

    You're mostly wrong but a little right.

It depends how you look at it.

    1° viewpoint
If you only look at yourself then maybe your argument has merit but debateble.

    2°viewpoint
Lets say you buy a new engine.
Your old engine gets shipped to Africa.
There it wil replace a even dirtier engine that will be scrapped.
In that case there is a clear gain for the environment.

    Hope i made it clear.

You didn't address the resources required to build the replacement. Still could be a net loss to the environment.

Each living person is a net loss to the environment. We are a walking disease on this planet, consuming and destroying everything in our path, leaving a mountain of waste behind us. We do it for profit and greed; a hand to mouth reaction to the world we live in, not taking a broader view of preserving the planet for the future of humanity and all living things.

When I was a kid, they said there were 50 years worth of proven oil reserves left in the world. Today, you'll hear that number extended out to 300 years. It is a mind control trick to make you think it is OK to continue to burn through the oil as fast as you want since you and I will be long dead before it runs out.

In Africa if an engine or truck starts it gets run. And run and run. They could care less about how clean it burns. They will only replace it when there is hole in the block. They have mastered the baling wire thing.

they don't have the government oversight and epa rules we have, so where is the motivation to take out a perfectly good engine and swap it for a cleaner one?

And they don't have the financial resources, generally speaking, to do it.

I know this because I've been there and seen it. It's a completely different mind set over there.

bottom line: their dirty engine won't get swapped out for any reason other than desperation.
