Some of us are truckers and people like me don't know any better. We are not happy anywhere else in life unless we are rolling.

As far as the self image of trucking OTR if it is so bad for you why do it? Find something else you enjoy and get to it.

Secret: trucking is feast and famine like oil. Save up while the loads pay good so that when you don't have any for a while you will be fine.

That's why I work at a job with a guaranteed weekly paycheck and will leave if they change it.

Get out of debt, save your money. It really doesn't take much money to have "eff you money" if you aren't in debt up to your eyeballs.

Crude is still moving in the fields. However as for OTR, there are too many decent paying local outfits for a person to resort to otr. Especially if you got years under your belt. Stop selling yourself short and taking the first JOB that's available. I say Job because that's all some of these places are. It's only going to get you enough to keep paying the Bill's. Whereas career positions offer far more in pay, benefits, and etc.

If you cant find a decent local gig in LTL, tankers, oversize, or a private corporation. Then apply move to an area that does. Many recruiters lie to get you in, hell if most companies were upfront about how they really are no one would apply there. The bait and switch techniques have to be used to get ppl in the seat at these otr places. Between that along with astronomical sign on bonuses, and the push of a driver shortage. Most ppl fall for it.

You choose that OTR company, so exhaust every level of resurch before going to the next outfit.

Here are some to look up

    Gemini aka Loves
    Air Products
    Nalco
    Old Dominion
    Estes Express
    Reagent chemical
    Ups freight
    R&L carriers
Ups Feeder driver (if you can get hired on off the street as they say).

P.S. there is no such thing as a good company. If you didnt start the place yourself. There will be some policy that you dont like. And all of the French benifits that were offered at these companies up until maybe the late 90's are over! Decency has no place in the business world. It's all about making a profit. So stay away from companies that consider a dunce. And apply to a terminal that can benifit you with pay, 401k, vacation, sick days, seniority, and possibly a m-f work schedule!!!

In my opinion, if you like oil field work you should work in North Dakota not Texas. Everyone goes to Texas, making much more competition for jobs. Get a job somewhere around Williston, ND and just stay there. Right now I know it is freezing cold there and will be for months but that is exactly why you can get a job there. Now is the perfect time to pretty much be guaranteed a good paying oil field job in North Dakota. The infrastructure there is much better than just a few years ago. Man camps exist but there is plenty of regular housing as well. Williston is actually a decent sized city and has everything you need or want. It is cold but dress warmly and you are just fine up there.
