I will be a new graduate driver and looking for a good company to work for.. Had talked with recruiter from Van Wyk refrigerated division... Company is offering percentage per load... They don't do cpm only .30 cpm for bobtail.. I was wondering if this will be a good company to start out with.. Any opinions?

Depends on the percentage and the miles. I know that was snarky, but true. It was a pretty broad question. What is the average billing and number of loads per week? If you know that, then you know what you are getting a percentage of. Lilewise, what are the average number of miles per week if you are in a cpm situation. Ask more questions of future employers to get a better feel.

When I did percentage you would end up with some really good paying loads and than some cheap loads so it always seemed to equal out to what you wqould get paid per mile. The other thing on percentage is I always wondered what the load actually paid but you will never know. I still like doiing percentage but you don't find alot of companies paying that way anymore. As far as Van Wyk they have been around along time so they are probally a fair company to go with.

Percentage is only worthwhile under two conditions.

First, you see the rate con and know exactly what the load was paid. If not, then you're getting a percentage of who knows what.

Second, you can control what loads you take and you have the knowledge of what lanes pay. Otherwise you're at the mercy of your dispatcher and can get stuck on a string of crap paying loads.

Like as already said, you will probably wind up averaging the same as milage. Or maybe worse, maybe better. It adds another variable to the crap shoot that is performances based pay.

There are worse choices than them. You should be alright with a company that size. Keep in mind rates aren’t the greatest right now and you never really know what the load pays on percentage unless you talk directly with the customer or broker, even then I have my doubts. You or anyone else will never convince me these companies are showing you the real rate confirmation.

with all that said welcome to the dog eat dog world of long haul trucking.

Companies that have really good paying customers will do you justice to get percentage. If this company is reliant solely on spot market freight, then you will want mileage. Van Wyk is a sizable reputable company. They fly a little under the radar. I would imagine they have some decent customers so I am thinking you may be alright

When I was there 4 years ago, they were a pretty decent company. Very good equipment, and was given load choices and/or the ability to turn down loads, although I usually took what they gave me. I left due to the driver facing cameras and that at the time deadhead wasn’t paid unless it was “excessive”, which was only paid at 10cpm. You can do much worse.

One thing to keep in mind...the transparency (and they will tell you what the load pays) is only as good as they want it to be. Meaning, all the loads go through the brokerage division before being given to transportation, so even the ratecon is only showing the rate AFTER they take what they want off the top through brokerage. They can take a $2/mi rate and take .10cpm or $1/mi and you will never know. It’s not just them, ANY company in the industry that pays percentage can and usually will do this.

I'm interested in this same question. Like the OP I'm just finishing up CDL class and I sent an application and talked to a representative from Tidewater Transit who apparently does percentage pay at 26% IIRC. The question like stated above is of course 26% of what exactly? I've been looking around for info on this company but haven't come across a whole lot negative or positive.
