I'm an owner operator with my wife in school right now. I'm looking at a few used custom sleeper deals. I have a couple questions. First. The size. I'm a little concerned about going too big. I do spot market load boards and I just don't see some of these trucks getting into some of these places. So should I limit the size of the truck to something around 80" sleeper?

Which brings me to my second question. With a husband wife team, should I be seriously considering finding another approach to loads? Like a dedicated company or run? Like the van line type show gigs?

And thirdly. Water. I used to have a camper. That was a no brainer. What about a big rig acquiring and disposing of water? And do you use your toilet? The dealer says, dump shower and sink water right there and dump the toilet cartridge in an approved area.

Thanks in advance for every response. I'll be watching this thread closely.

New **** has come to light! I'd buy a Volvo 780 and run it awhile first if you want the biggest and most comfortable sleeper without going custom. They are huge. Then if you decide to go long term have something built or better yet buy used.

I have a sink I built in mine with a submersible RV pump and faucet and a 5 gallon Aquatainer from Walmart under the bottom bench. It works great. I just use it for washing face and hands and cooking. It drains straight to ground. I am picky about what I dump where but it doesn't seem to matter to most truckers. For bathroom, there are several threads on this but I wouldn't have any of that in the truck. There's a place to stop every few miles in this country. No need unless she is real picky.

You can put a porta-potty under the rear table and get by several days on that. They don't stink except when you open them. Keep it clean and use the chemical and it's no problem.

Flying J dump for $3 with rewards card.

Water available at many fuel islands, winter time in the north a bit less.

    My 95 Pete with 120” ICT scales 37,600 with a 53 flat.

You can always drop trailer and flick the yard jockey or another driver $20 to spot in tight docks.

Well, at the end of the day you just have to make it happen. Like dropping the trailer to get fuel because your 16’ wide load won’t get through the fuel island.

The arguments against big sleepers usually pivot around weight and maneuvering in tight situations.

I’ve yet to see revenue suffer because I can’t haul a 48,000 lb load of cheap lumber or a 50k coil.

I know guys who strip everything out of the rig to make it lighter and thus haul heavy. But I’ve yet to see heavy loads for 5 axle flat pay enough to justify it.

I’ll probably never go back. Being able to make coffee, take a dump, watch telly, shower and change clothes without ever setting foot outside the truck spoils you pretty quick.

Seems like most guys in small trucks do all of that these days, except the showering and changing clothes part. I see the evidence in the parking lot every day :D

blairandgretchen, Tell me about the telly. Do you dish or how does that work? I know I could be asking the dealer these questions but you know, sales folks...

I'm curious about freight too. You pull flat and sometimes specialized. What do most custom rigs pull? Funny thing is I almost never see them. They seem to run nights (smart) and they never sleep at "most" truck stops (smart) and they are this secret club of people that I rarely see doing ANYTHING! I remember once seeing an older couple step out of the side door of this sweet crazy huge rig at at fuel island, I was so jealous. But couldn't tell you what they were pulling. This extended sleeper obsession is new to me. It's like buying a new car, never saw one before and now you see them everywhere.

And it sounds like you run your own thing, no leasing on. Is that right? I hate leasing on. I'm not getting what I'm paying for.

You and me both brother! I swear just today. And I'm sure tomorrow will bring another tale. What the #### with all the chicken bones by the fuel islands?

You’re right. Buy a purple Ferrari and you think you’re unique, until you spot every other purple Ferrari out there.

    I’m leased on. 73% of $10000 beats 100% of $6000.

Rabbit ears. 20+ channels for free. Got a bigger TV at the house, Road is for work.

    Reliable, cars.
    Allied , bed bugs.
    Southern Pride, team aviation.

Freight don’t determine the bunk size, necessarily.

I don’t live and breathe big rigs - it’s a means to an end. But I’d rather it be comfortable.

Wow. Super insightful. You have no idea how much you've helped. I'm always over-doing things so if we were standing face to face I'd be buying you a keg.
