Not sure if this was posted but my first load ever I was so excited about pulling into the receiver that I forgot to open the trailer doors before backing into the dock. The dock man came out looking at me like a total ######. LOL

From the "How the heck did he do that?" files:

I stopped at the Pilot (on the south side of 80) in Walcott, IA for a sandwich and was pulling around the far end of the pumps to back into an empty slot at the end of the parking line. As I came around the end of the pumps, I looked forward and there was a Swift truck over close by the guard rail along the edge of the lot with the tractor at strange angle. I backed into a slot and walked over to see why the cab was tilted...

The driver had somehow run his right front steering tire over the guardrail and was hung up on it! The wheel was on the other side of the rail and the tractor frame was, it looked to me, wedged onto the guard rail pretty securely...

I figure he had to be moving pretty fast to run over the top of the rail as he was some distance from both ends where they angled towards the ground.

My first mistake and costly one

My friend had bought a trailer with 22.5 tires and his truck had 24.5. Rather than lowering it, I raised it with the fifth wheel pin in. He was pissed off but he knew I was learning and forgave me. I still hear about it and this was only time I messed while not having a license.

I forgot to disconnect air lines while dropping a trailer and pulled them off in front of the terminal mgr.Bad thing was,I was there to pick up a hot load.Had to bobtail 20 miles to shop.Fittings to the tractor were rusted up and they had to be torched off.Lucky the load was reassigned,Mgr scolded me and then made fun of me with with the other drivers. After 20 yrs I still can do stupid stuff if I don't double check myself and like others, could probably take up the whole forum telling the about situations I got myself into.

When I first started as a company driver we used to pull the super vans(the ones with the small tires and they had the legs that you had to jack up in between the tandems). I got to my delivery and backed into the dock, high idled the truck and went back to the control panel for the legs. Each leg had a control handle to jack it up with by air. Went to all the trouble to jack up the back end of trailer to dock height and had to do a double take as I had forgotton to open the doors. Good thing it was at nite so you couldn`t see how red my face was, but i`m sure you could have seen the flames as I did a slow burn.:biggrin_25516: Had to drop down the trailer pull out and open the doors and back in and do it all over again. Never ever made that mistake again. :biggrin_25523:
