I never could figure out the 8 to 2 sleeper either even know i have used it many many times... I know how it works but in terms of how much time is needed to complete the breaks but i get lost when it comes to figuring out how much time is coming back after breaks are done..... Elogs figures it out for me , so i guess technology isnt all bad....

Here’s my shot at explaining it:
The 8 hrs must be in sleeper berth. The 2 hrs can be off duty or sleeper. The 2 hrs are optional.
Example:
08:00, drive 7 hrs
15:00, take 8-hr sleeper break (pauses 14)
23:00, can drive 4 hrs max (due to 11-hr rule)
03:00, take 2-hr break
05:00, can drive 7 hrs max (new 14-hr clock starting from 23:00)
The new 14-hr clock only applies if you used the 2-hr break. If you only used the 8-hr sleeper, then there is no new 14-hr clock. There would only be a pause of the 14-hr. The pause is the entire 8-hr sleeper break.
The example above has been simplified. It’s missing two pre-trips and one post-trip inspection. You want a pre-trip at 08:00 and 23:00, and also a post-trip at 03:00 or 05:00.
Your ELD will do this automatically. Keep an eye on your summary tab to verify once the 8-hr sleeper or the 2-hr break have gone through. The 2-hr break is optional. Some people just use the 8-hr split once, and then continue their usual schedule of taking a 10-hr break.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -

What if I make it within 2 hours of home at 2200 and hit my 11th hour. I shut down for my break. Can I leave before 0800 as long as I’m logged in the sleeper berth? If so, would it be at 0600 when 8 hours are complete?

They need to scrap all that crap and just have a few rules, easy to understand. My opinion is 1 paragraph for HOS should explain it, not a novel.
You can be on duty for 12 hours in a 16 hr period. On duty means any work including drive. 10 hours resets you. And get rid of that 70 hr rule. A lot of us run recaps anyway. No need to study a textbook.
But anyway, i notice when it kicks into effect, but thats it. That 8/2 thingy.
