Freightliners have better automatic transmissions in my experience, at least the day-cabs do. Less frequent shifts, more time in the power band, and MUCH smoother backing.

From my understanding, all the autos have crawl mode. It is something that can be disabled or enabled by taking it into the shop? I've driven both, crawl mode will make you wonder why it is ever turned off.
Muskie Thanks this. -
The ten speed autos are terrible. I had a heck of a time learning to back up smoothly with one and never did gain confidence in tight situations.
Honestly if I would have started driving and had to learn to back a truck up with one of the ten speed autos I probably would have quit and got a job at Home Depot.
I did like them for running hills though since they didn’t have the manual mode locked out.
I’m in a new ultra loft with the 12 speed now. That 12 speed is actually a pretty decent transmission. Still haven’t done much for big hills with it yet but I did make it down monte eagle without smoking the breaks so I’ll get my my technique dialed in soon enough. On less steep hills it works better than the old ten speed auto for sure. And pulls the uphill side better as well.Last edited: Feb 12, 2020

Speaking of these new 12s. Does anyones shift like a rookie? I swear the truck I had when I was briefly with R+L shifted like a green horn. It was slow and often jumped the truck. I was convinced sooner or later I'd look in the mirror and see the gears all spilled out over the road. Was a pig in crap when I got back into smooth floating.

Sounds a lot like that 10 speed Eaton auto. Man I hated backing with that transmission.

@supersnackbar pretty much what that pac12 did. Absolutely horrendous. I'd imagine trying to back a trailer/dolly or double trailer would be even harder with one of those.

The DT12 in my 2020 Freightliner shifts great... even backing. Haven’t creamed a dock yet.
And in 59,616 miles, I am averaging 9.8 mpg.
I do haul a lot of light loads though... but idle every nightJarhed1964 and RoadCall Thank this.
