All drivers should be paid by the hour and until they are it's just a rolling sweat shop. There is a shortage on the pay side which fuels the so called driver shortage propaganda piece that I've been hearing for the last 20 years or so.
No way has driver wages kept up with inflation. Just look how much things cost in the way of food alone, especially at the truck stop. I gotta laugh 2 containers of hard boiled eggs at Flying J for $6, please. I can buy the same at Walmart for a lot less.Nothereoften, Voodoo Pyg, TokyoJoe and 2 others Thank this. -
Your right it hasn't 100k a year should be average with inflation but if anyone worked for a company that you make that you are treated like garbage. An example I talked to a former Walmart driver he was fired because his supervisor called "Walmart" have access to his phone records saw this regardless he was talking to a supervisor regardless he was at Walmart not driving was fired you gotta ask what kinda bogus crap is this? That's just one of many bad stories I hear from Walmart drivers and don't get me started on UPS. -
Soon, it'll likely be law that in order to obtain a CDL, one has to pay for & attend a "certified driver school", under the guise of "highway safety" of course, further adding to mega's exploiting drivers that choose their "driving school", while promising them a good paying job in return.
The alternative will be for one to take out a student loan to get certified, further adding to their debt load, only to find out the job sucks and pays ####.
The days of pap & grandpap teaching you will be gone. Just a thought, but here's an idea. Leave as an OTR O/O, get certified, and open a certified driving school, maybe something to it, I don't know....BigHossVolvo, Badmon and x1Heavy Thank this. -
You can buy just about a case of eggs for that much. Gather some wood and boil them. Just remember throw away the floaters before you do. (Accumulated gas which is bad for us.)
You are right about inflation. 500 in 1980's money or even before that is a hell of alot of money today.
But today's money is almost imaginary monopoly money, you just need a big pile of it to do anything in life. I had visited that subject many times.
It is not a driver shortage ever. Its a PAY shortage. I shant mind paying 3.00 for pound of apples out of Yakima if the driver hauling it to my town gets paid like 30.00 a hour or something really good. I doubt there is a driver shortage at CH Express this is the compensation listed from the website. This is for OTR. THIS SHOULD BE THE NORM.
Senior Status (More then 2 years of experience):
"Driving" / "On duty"
Starting salary : 25$/hr - 18$/hr
Year 1: 26$/hr - 18$/hr
Year 2: 26$/hr - 18$/hr
Year 3: 27$/hr - 18$/hr
Year 5: 28$/hr - 18$/hr
- Junior Status (Less then 2 years of experience):
"Driving" / "On duty"
Starting salary: 22$/hr - 18$/hr
Year 1: 23$/hr - 18$/hr
Year 2: 26$/hr - 18$/hr
Year 3: 27$/hr - 18$/hr
Year 5: 28$/hr - 18$/hr
• After working 60 hrs in a week you will be paid time and a half
• Premium for "lay over" : 200$ per day
• Premium for "wide load" : 75$ per day
• Premium for "inspection without violation" : 50$ per day
• Premium for "pick ups and deliveries" : 25$ each (in addition to the hourly wage)

This whole thing is about bringing in foreign workers whose only skill beyond that of an American worker is a willingness to work for less than half the pay. Trucking industry included. Look at all the homeless living on the sidewalks of San Fransisco. Same #### thing.

Your pay has to increase by aroud $1150 yearly over a 20 yr period just to keep up with inflation.
If you made $50,000 in 2000 as a OTR driver you would need to be making $73,000 in 2020 just to break even & have the same purchasing power
The avg OTR driver makes around $57,000 in 2019
You read industry rags & they all talk about driver shortages & yet it is really capacity that they are short of.
They need more drivers to run the same miles they ran in 2000 because of the change in regulations.
They already know they pay less then 20yrs ago because they need more drivers to do the same job & don't want to increase payroll to do it. This is why L/O's & misclassification of drivers is so important for them. You save millions every yr in payroll & drag out the lawsuits for a decade & it's all CODB in the end.
$57,000 avg per year in 2020 for 70hrs a week? They give you a nice autoshift comfortable computerized sweatshop on wheels to drive these days & it's just lipstick on a pig because your getting bent over worse then Ned Beatty in Deliverancesnowlauncher, TokyoJoe, Mollythecow and 2 others Thank this. -
Truckers love the abuse, Truckers love to BE abused, Truckers will heap scorn on those who even slightly hint that they should NOT be abused. Truckers are and always will be their own worst enemy. End of rant.
