I oversecured and drove very cautiously for about a year. I wasn’t used to seeing freight behind me.
Same with oversize - treated it like a military operation meshed with an IRS audit.
The flatbed forum here is filled with great resources and folks that are committed to safety, and assistance to others.

Theres no shame at all in asking the loader "how do most guys secure this stuff" when you get a wierd one. Also pay attention to every flat load you see at the pumps.
Every driver does their own unique thing too. I have coworkers that haul the exact same stuff and we all do it our own way when you start looking at details. Its your load and your life in front of it. You decide when its secure and you pay the price if it aint.PoleCrusher, blairandgretchen, randypinenc and 2 others Thank this. -

Securement is simple, you pull one end forward and the other back or you throw straps or chains across the load and squeeze it down on the trailer. Don’t haul multiple piece machinery loads or try and tarp for a few weeks. So easy a Kiwi can do it.

No reason you can’t start with flatbed, but there may be a wait for a junky company trailer. If there is any way you could bring your own flatbed it would be easier.
I don’t believe the rules on how you progress into oversized are not written in stone, blairandgretchen, D.Tibbitt, randypinenc and 1 other person Thank this. -
I thought the same thing, I took the class when it was 1 day and when they use to offer it in Jacksonville/St Augustine long time ago.....You learn a lot of rules and regulations in class, you learn how to do it when you get out on the road,,,,,,,blairandgretchen, D.Tibbitt, FoolsErrand and 2 others Thank this.

As an o/o do you think they (Landstar) are a decent company to sign on with? If not, who would you put at the top of the list for someone coming out of the tanker industry going into flatbed?blairandgretchen, D.Tibbitt and nikmirbre Thank this.

I left Landstar after almost 11 years a few months ago however I’d say yes they’re a decent company. I do believe if you have no experience you have to wait 6 months to take the flatbed class. It’ll give you a chance to focus on learning the system. Guys at landstar.... here’s the funny thing I de-leased on a Wednesday and guess what I got in the mail Friday??????
My cruise certificate
