I'm not an engine designer, are you? Have you read your operator's manual?
And... apples and oranges, I'm afraid. I understand peak power curves, but my comment had to do with compression braking.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
Wasted Thyme and Rideandrepair Thank this.

If you want mpg, go auto.
If you want reliability, go manual.stillwurkin and Chubby Fly Thank this. -
Worrying about auto/manual is like worrying about the color of the truck. Don't waste your time.dunchues and Odin's Rabid Dog Thank this.

Look at the replacement cost for both, seems to be reason enough to go manual right there.

Ice, and downhills with ice plain scare me in an auto. I want the instant application of power when I need it, and the instant ability to remove all power if it needs it.
Add off road issues, and we’ll be buying 13 speeds for a long time. -
In another couple of years you find any manuals in company fleets, simply in a fleet situation across the spectrum of drivers the auto's now have proven there more dependable and more economic for the fleets. Personally I don't care I'm a driver I can drive what ever they purchase. If I'm buying then I have a say, If the company is buying it, drive. If your stupid enough to claim your going to quit, your lieing to yourself, your not going to do anything but cry like a baby, shut up and drive what they buy, or go buy your own.

I have a 18 speed Eaton Ultrashift for almost four years now.
Generally I like it. But it does some stupid stuff occasionally.
There's enough frustration that I'll go back to a manual next time. Better control in farm yards when the lack of traction is an issue. -
I don't find any control issue with the auto, except if I need to rock it out of slimey stuff, mud snow sand.
