First off Roadrunner--can't speak for today--BUT/-back in another century a few lifetimes ago-when I was w/Big R-The 2 hr extension was Always put into effect by regional safety--not line haul dispatch-&almost always invocated at time if original dispatch for both line haul and road boards--don't know ur situation but something to keep in mind if u want to use exemption to CYA
As to whoever posted bout legal jargon--Problem is most LEOS can't agree on interpretation either--I'd lol--but it really ain't funny

I am a local linehaul driver, and my routes end at the same terminal each day. The only exception is when they deliberately send me further out with the intention of me laying over a state or two over for my ten. I have found myself in a position where I was broke down, and the mechanic spent SIX hours trying to troubleshoot an electrical issue (that is a whole 'nother story). By the time I got to my turn point, I was half an hour short to complete my run (I was 11 & 1/2 hours into my shift)... Yet I only used up three hours of drive time. I am sure that 16 hour rule would have applied to me (had I known about it).

As for adverse weather, I also agree. I would not intentionally push myself out further with the bad weather as an excuse if I knew about it in advance. I did find myself at the bottom of a pass that received waaay more snow than they forcasted (they were off by a mere 13 inches). It took the better part of 45 minutes for people halfway up the pass to get themselves chained up and unblock traffic. Again, I am not digging for some legal excuse to stretch my hours, but things do come up. There are special circumstances.

 

California has its own set of rules if you are classified as an intrastate driver. 12 hours driving, 16 hours on duty and 80 hours in 8 days.
