I have heard truck drivers expounding the virtues of using an "extra gear" , flip the range selector up from 4th and instead of going to 5th, put it in the LO position. I don't think the college educated engineers designed it for that. Truck drivers at the lunch counter and CB's with their stories are the equivalent of forum trolls lol. They just enjoy putting out bad 4-1-1 knowing they did their part to plant the seeds of destruction. At least they can know they left their mark on the universe in some way even if it was destructive.

My clutch brake is starting to go so what I have to do is range select, UP position and try to put it in 8HI gently. As it is almost in there I quickly range select DOWN and put it in LO or 1st to get going. Couple times I forgot about the range UP and slipped it into LO position and it made a horrible noise. Definitely recommend against this "extra gear" everyone talks about.

scottied67 Thanks this.

I use it to much apparently. Not as part of my normal shift pattern of course, but just if I don't want to drop into the low side I will stick it in there.

Twisted a main shaft in a 9 speed using that gear once, be the last time I ever try that.
