And I will add that we tracked idle time on our bonus and mine was usually in the 1% range and it still did the soot loading probably due to 15w40 and 35-40k mile oil changes. After these issues we switched to a 10w30.

I like my 15/ 40 Mobil. Wrench talked me into using Valvoline last time, which is supposed to be the Cummins oil, but when it would get hot, it would take it like 5 minutes to come back up to normal pressure. This Mobile bounces back in about a minute.

    I change at 20K.

I use 1 gallon at about 16K. I add the gallon, even for only 4K miles.

But that Valvoline, it used 1 gallon at 10K.
    Stuff looks like water.

Mobil Delvac 15-40 is good oil Dave.

I'd recommend their 10-30 semi syn or full synthetic 5-40 or 5-30 though. Less burn off (volatility) and more protection out there in that heat.

With that stuff you shouldn't need to add anything on your 20k interval, it won't burn off.

Is there a thermostat in the oil coolers on these engines?

I changed my oil today at Petro in Brazil, IN, (with my oil, I purchased oil at Meijer by gallon in Ohio was 19$/gal ) .Petro charges 115$ (tax included )for PM with their Fletguard filters 3 oil filter +1 fuel+ water separator filter, greased the truck ,checked transmission diff oil levels.(plus 20$ motivational tip for lube tech, money before always, they move faster and do it right.
So, about 300$ why not synthetic, years ago was way more expensive.
I saved a cup for analysis, was looking dirty, so down the road i stopped at Speedco in Effingham,IL and run an oil analyse(25$) .It came out ok after 30,000 miles, first time I did an oil testing on this truck. But , I understand Speedco oil testing is not very accurate.

Normal for my truck is 173 to 209. Fan kicks in at 209. I have a scan gauge. I monitor oil psi/water temp and boost/egt.
