Nope, the 2 doesn't stop the 14 hour clock, only the 8 does. As long as your rest periods are legal, you add the hours from your current duty period and the last duty period, including the 2 hr break if that's your last rest period. As long as you're within the 11/14, you're legal.

I think you mean "your new 11 would start after the second 2 hour break?" Because otherwise what would stop drivers from resting just 8 hours instead of 10?
Ok so say I came back on duty at 0400 drove until 0700. Then took the second 2 hour break ending at 0900. Now I have 8 hours left on my 11 and my 14 hour window would expire at 1800? -
Your new 14/11 starts at the end on your 1st qualifying break, but you do not get a new 14/11 until you have completed both breaks. You need "the equivalent of 10 consecutive hours off duty" before you get a new day...
correct. So if you then drove 8 hours (1700) & stopped for 8 hours (0100) your "new" 14/11 would start at 0900 (but the 8 hours from 1700-0100 would not count against your 14)DoneYourWay Thanks this. -
new rules?? I have logged it off duty for 33 years, but back to the original post. I simply take a 30 minute lunch break .
if you are having to do 14 hours and not be able to take a 30 minute off duty break, you need to reassess your situation. you either have a bad job or are completely nuts. -
I must be completely nuts then, I have never needed to take a full 30 min break. 15 mins for fuel, 5 mins at a rest area for restroom, that's enough to stretch my legs. I can make a sandwich in 5 mins and be rolling again while I eat. I don't get paid for sitting around. I take my break during my 10.
And old rules stated if you were anywhere in your truck but the sleeper you were required to log it on duty (not that anyone ever did). In february they changed it so any time you are at rest in the truck you can log it as off duty.DoneYourWay Thanks this. -
I tried it a few times to gain some time back from the 30 minute break. It works only if you do not do a little On Duty safety type check or pretrip after the 8 Sleeper.
So lets say I'm coming off a 10 hour break, pretrip, drive 5.5 hours, take a 2 hour then drive 5.5 hours and an 8 Sleeper, back to work have 5.5 available again, my carrier wants to see another pretrip now. If I do a 15 minute pretrip I have saved a whole 15 minutes off the 30 minute break by split breaking, not really enough time savings for the trouble.
I'm not discounting split rules, just that it won't save much off the 30 minute break.Last edited: Sep 26, 2013

you would have had to log that inspection anyway taking a 10...

So you logged a pair of PTIs in a day, you are required to do so anyway (though that is a hotly debated issue). I log 1 pre trip when I start and a post trip when I shut down. Generally my pre trip is only 5 or 6 minutes to make sure lights work, 5th wheel was not messed with etc. because on my post trip when I parked I checked all my mechanical stuff over so if there was anything wrong it could be fixed during my break, takes about 15 mins or so. You aren't going to have a break pad crack or go out of adjustment while you are parked so no real reason to check them again.

All that to work around a 30 min break. OMG. Why not just go off duty the first 30 min of the several hours you are loading or unloading. Break covered. Going around your ankle to get to your elbow. Lol. It amazes me how drivers can take something so easy and make it so hard.
