Read on Land Line just now FMCSA extended an exemption for one company to continue to run a 5/5 split sleeper for teams. They denied a solo driver request some time earlier because he couldn't provide a plan that convinced them he would get "restorative" rest.
My gut reaction is okay restorative rest is important. Equally important is that the negative effects of insufficient sleep is cumulative in my experience.
So, what I think is fair is... coming off a 34 you should be able to do a 5/5 (or better but all the way up to the whole 10) the first 24 hours, then 6/4 the next day, etc.. until leveling out at 8/2.
Maybe put in a provision that after 3 consecutive days of 8/2 or better you regain up to 7/3, 4 consecutive 6/4, etc
Anyways, that is what feels fair to me and I'm interested to see other reactions

All I can say is back when 5/5 was legal I got about 4 hours of sleep per day when I was running during the week. The split wouldn’t be so bad now with elogs but back then I’d untarp/offload, drive to my pickup, reload/tarp, and grab a shower before I hit a scale. I’d log the break and catch everything else up and hit the road again.

It's probably bad manners to post on my own thing but after thinking about it I think an easier system would be 3 consecutive days of complete 10 hour breaks and your 14 hour clock resets and is ready to use after the 5 hour mark.
So basically if you're well rested than one day of driving on a half nights sleep is safe. Can only do it once in any 4 day period. -
Like to at least see 5/5 through 8/2, or anything in between more than we have now. But, not something different on different days.
Would at least be more like things were in the SAFER old days before they started mucking with all the HOS, even before the ELD mandate. At least we were able to break/rest on our own without being forced by an unforgiving clock countdown.ducnut Thanks this. -
Just get rid of the 14 and things would be fine.

I don't see them getting rid of the rules altogether so it makes me sense to me to advocate for changes that benefit me especially when select companies get exemptions that benefit them.D.Tibbitt Thanks this. -
I don't see why it would make a difference whether you're part of a team or solo, 5 hours of sleep is 5 hours of sleep. In fact, I'd say a solo probably gets more rest out of the 5 hours than someone trying to sleep while the truck is hopping over all of today's modern pothole and ski jump filled roads and bridges.
