Not directed at you personally but if you have your log book up to date, all your paperwork in order and truck in good repair then you have nothing to worry about.

Yes I have been shut down twice. Once for a math error that was my mistake and once for a blinker not working. Math error never happened again, nor will it. Blinker was a wire that had broken sometime that day. Fixed it, signed the paperwork and was on my way.

The only reason to be scared of a scale is if you know something is not right. Yes it can be inconvenient but I for one am glad they are there to do their jobs. With 4 kids and 4 grandkids out there on the road, I wish they would take more of them off the road.

Hazmat does not automatically make it a bomb. There are lots of things that are hazardous to life or environment that do not explode.

OP... The fines are steep to keep you from doing it again. If the fine was $50 that memory does not last as long as a $500 fine does.

I'm negative on it mostly because it is another thing that makes steering wheel holders steering wheel holders. In other words, as soon as you take it out of their truck they are trained likea a monkey to listen for that slow beep that means Bypass. When they don't hear anything, boom they are totally unaware there was a weigh station anyway.

The other thing I don't like about all those nanny pass and wyze things is we don't know what else can read them as we go down the road. For instance, Arizona has little cameras every few miles along the freeways taking big truck pictures and they have openly admitted that the purpose of those cams is to catch big rigs. I'm wondering if they also have prepasswyze readers as well and clock back to the time you passed the last weigh station.

My first week of driving I didn't go over the scale and was told to stop and bring in paperwork.
When I went in the officer asked me why I didn't go over scale, I told her I didn't realize which side was the scale (every scale seems to be a little different) I went back around and scaled out legally went back in and she wrote me for failure to obey traffic sign $280 and must be payed before I can continue! Since it was my first week I was broke so I had to call a friend at 10pm to have him pay with his visa so I could leave. If that's not extortion I don't know what is. Since then I have crossed this port half dozen times and there is no pre lane sign indicating which lane they want you in, you just have to know which one the scale is on.
Also there was another guy in there that was being charged with same thing except he had hazmat and it was twice the amount!

Every scale house is different. It would be nice if they were standardized. Most of the scales I had been to are the drive across at 5mph deal. Until I hit the scale in Bozeman MT where the red light came on. I just froze and tried to look look in the scale house to see what to do giving the I don't know arm hand signal. The dot officer had to come out and explain how I had to stop with each axle group on the scale. I guess that distracted the officer because the next time I went through that scale I got my first inspection. I had a violation for not having the us dot number on the passenger side of my truck.

So what I'm saying is that sometimes we get screwed by the scales being different and sometimes we can sneak by because of our ignorance.

Of course you have to stop every axle group in the scale. How else are they going to weigh you? You can literally see the size of the scale, it doesn't take much thinking to figure out if it's a platform scale the entire truck can fit on, or if it's a short axle scale. Use that head of yours for more than a hat rack

Having recently hit the NW and those weigh each axle scales, it threw me too. I wasn't sure if it weighed in motion or stop, etc.

Now, with benefit of 20/20 hindsight, it will make more sense the next time I go NW.

Safety Blitz 2014, Van Horn, Tx. Shut down for "my front brakes not working". Mechanic comes out and says "what would you like me to fix? There is nothing wrong with your brakes."

You can't argue with them if they don't want to listen. That OOS is still on my record and I had my stuff together. Sure wish that check station had a PrePass and that I had been given the green light.

What you have to worry about is an officer who is having a bad day, a new one who doesn't know the law, an incompetent one or a crooked one. Couple that with the fact that once given the green light you don't even have to lift off the go pedal and who cares what else it's reading? If you have your stuff together it shouldn't matter what it's reading?
