Here at Swift we are not required to have any money come out of our settlements as far as a maintenance account. We can elect to have up to so much a mile come out and be placed into a escrow account to use as we want. They just call it a maintenance account. Driver stops to have b-service. Used a certain macro on the q-comm and ask to have $xxx.xx transferred to his fuel card and then writes out a com check. If I am a little short one week I just pull up that macro and say transfer $xxx.xx to my next settlement. If I am a little in the whole as far as truck payment, it covers it. Swift can not touch that account unless I authorize. What is nice is for when I am out of the country. Then I just send a email to my DM and he will transfer the money needed for next weeks truck payment. If that money is sitting in my personal bank account and I am going to be short on the truck payment, how I am going to get that money to my settlement. Yes, I can carry that negative balance forward to the next week.

Just stepping in real quick-- over at Roadrunner and I'm sure it is similar at A&A, certain deductions happen ever week of the year. Then there is one big deduction 12 times a year.

So lets say they deduct $800 a week every week and once a month deduct $500. In between those they deduct a separate amount for OCC/ACC and last month's IFTA.

If you work out here 40 weeks a year you can expect to go negative settlement 12 weeks a year.

What you have to do is step up your money management game and let go of the idea that you have to keep flush positive settlements all the time. A negative settlement doesn't mean anything, you're not even charged interest for it. It is like a personal credit and the company is banking that you will pay it back with seat time== which is the best way to pay it, rather than taking your own cash you need to eat and maintain your equipment to keep your settlement flush.

Imagine you paid your settlement flush and then your maintenance guys calls and says 'your truck is done, come pay $5500 to get it back' then your phone rings and the tax man says 'it's the end of the quarter, do you have $3500 for the IRS today'? Then the old lady is calling 'the baby needs diapers' and you're thinking well the good news is the truck payment is flush but the bad news is we are not eating this week.

  5. I've found that everyone's situation is different and unique. That being said, if you make a nice check, and you're fixed net weekly is somewhere in the 500-700 range...meaning that is what you need to net after truck payment and fuel, and deducting for taxes and maintenance accounts, you can live off 100 dollars a week and be perfectly fine to take 10-14 days off every 4-5 weeks. I've been doing it for years. It's a matter, in my opinion obviously, if how bad do you want it. How bad do you want to take time off with your family? Bad enough to live really cheap while you're out here on the road? Bad enough to make zero excuses? I'm not trying to sound testy or sound pompous, but ultimately, it's a matter of will, work ethic, drive, focus, and heart. Anytime I start to let the lazy thoughts creep up into my head I think about my 7 year old and my 3 year old and about how much they love spending Quality time with Daddy, then, it's really easy to not spend any money money out here. It's easy to make myself a tuna sandwich instead of spend 10-15 dollars on a meal in a truck stop. How bad do you want to succeed in your situation? Bad enough to be the first one up in the a.m. and the last one to set the brakes and go to bed....all driving is, is an opportunity to make your financial dreams come true, you still gotta work all aspects of this game. You gotta work, you gotta budget, you plan for hometimes, you gotta plan for it all, and then hope that good paying loads pop. Aloha, Ry

  6. You my friend obviously understand the game. Thanks for stepping up in this thread and being able to showcase the fine prints of L/P.

One thing that has not been asked, what kind of equipment do they offer as far as truck. Now let me clarify something for you. I have been in this industry for over 20 years and at the present time I am on my second lease with Swift, so I can say that I have been around the block a few times, and many years ago about 2 years with JCT. The reason why I like the escrow account is that I know that it is coming out, but the old saying, I do not see it so I do not miss it, but I know that it is there if something does happen. I see my bank account all the time, I have a habit of not checking what is in my escrow account unless something is coming up and I might need it. Also when I go out of the country Swift does not have a panic scare since they can see what is in there and they know that when I get back home the negative will be taken care of. There are times that it is much easier on the mind when I kow that it is there and the negative will be taken care of instead of worrying, are the miles and loads there that will cover the negative.

Well I was passed on! They told me I had been out too long and I lost all my experience except for the last 7 months, so they said go get a full year somewhere and call them back

I work for A&A and I don't agree with that. Not like you forgot how to drive a truck.
