A Newbie Needing Direction

    I used to work there and didn't stay long. Wasn't at Bluffton, but have delivered to that warehouse. I worked 6 or 7 days a week delivering that Kroger stuff with drops all the way to California and a good paycheck was $600.00
    The California stores are Von's and they're union and hard to deal with.
    Usually do a drop & hook in Los Angeles and head back to east coast. Drop the empty in Los Angeles and hook to a pre-loaded one heading back east.

    there are certainly companies your husband can drive for that pay and treat employees well. his odds of working for one those companies with 12 mo exp and no endorsements is slim to none.

    with home daily LTL Linehaul jobs hanging around I really don't know why anyone with experience would not give it heavy consideration. I started my Linehaul career about 16 months ago and I'll never look back. I got lucky on a friends referral and I hope to retire from this job. he'll prob need bare min 2 years exp, clean driving record, all endorsements and a slew of other prerequisites to get a Linehaul job worth having.

    out of curiosity - where did you move from? I always thought the cost of living in Indiana was fairly low.

    if I were him I'd do everything I could to stick it out at least another year where he is and then find an LTL outfit he likes, there are plenty of them in Indy.

    There might still be a flatbed outfit out of Rockport. But it's no sense going all the way down there from Ft Wayne.

    Another idea will be to get doubles and run the toll roads Ohio, etc. There are pads in which they break em apart.

    Any time a company issues a truck to you a company driver and you find problems with it great enough to fail DOT or break down, it is a duty to turn that rig into the shop. If they yell and scream find another company. (And they probably will...)

    Its really hard as if you don't know already to avoid being ensared in mire of the bottom feeding companies with crappy ####.

    Too many drivers will not find & talk to current drivers before they change companies.

    Many conversations are "I'll have good pay & plenty of hometime, right?" Instead, find current drivers for the company or division and ask "what is your pay, conditions of trucks, when do you get home, etc."

    Ask the company to have some drivers call you. You want an longtime & newer driver. Longtime driver gives you big picture over time, newer driver gives you "do they do what you expected." Even if you have to drive your car far away to their yard to contact current drivers, it's cheaper than changing companies, moving, or going broke if it doesn't turn into a great place to work.

    Get endorsements, and find an LTL gig, ODFL is a good one I can vouch for.
