I cut my teeth on an ELD when I started in this industry 7 years ago. The best money I made as a company driver using one was when I worked line haul and did like 70% drop and hooks.
There's a lot of potential income lost sitting at docks when you're being paid by the mile, limited to 70 hrs in 8 days. Especially when you're not compensated for standby and unreasonable detention.
Not to mention, so many companies have to throttle the potential earnings of a driver because of appointment times assigned by shippers and receivers.
The problem is exacerbated even more because of ELD's.
But this issue is like beating a dead horse.
A question that is NOT being addressed about the ELD..

Why don't you educate yourself on what is going on in the court system right now.
Are YOU telling me that we do NOT have to hustle to make ends meet when we are held up at shippers and receivers? That we don't have to try to maintain our customer base?
This discussion is more for owner operators, not some JB Hunt or SWIFT driver.
I've NEVER in 35 years hung out at a truckstop let alone slept at one. I have absolutely NO IDEA where you are coming from and I have a feeling that you have no idea where you are coming from either.
Youre talking out your ###.
We are definitely cut from another cloth. You sound like a cop, actually. You talk like one.
I can't really even fathom the words you just spoke... as if.. you were the Key-Note speaker for the ELD.. the only problem is; you haven't yet educated yourself as to what kind of power this thing is going to have on OTR and Independents.
You can shut this conversation for all i care because all i foresee is more ignorance coming.
I'll even take a time out.

When staying at shippers and receivers is not permitted then what?
When moving a very short distance to a dock more than 30 feet like the new mandate states will be recorded can't maintain line 1 or 2 anymore. We are all going to have to re-learn how to work. If shippers don't get us loaded and unloaded in a timely manner they will learn to expect more transit time.
My plan is to let my customers know the truck will be at the receiver no less than x hours from the moment it leaves the shipper. Schedule around that. Don't like it hire someone who will promise you more than they can deliver and deal with the associated problems that will arise. -
The only reason the HOS exists is because it allows departments of transportation to charge citation revenue. They aren't interested in safety. If they were, the HOS would make sense and be flexible enough to allow all types of drivers to make money on the road (not everyone works 14 and sleeps 10).Peter Griffin Thanks this. -

How about the times when some of you are forced to park. In the middle of nowhere. As in when Nevada got washed out and most of you didn't know about it. ( for instance )Peter Griffin Thanks this. -
When the mandate goes live it would be very easy to modify the Hours of Service because the box (love the box by the way) knows how to do the math.
What they need to do is implement some flexible splits in the system. All we have now is 8/2 or 2/8. But we need the option of 3/7, or 4/6 or 5/5 as well.
